On a quick pass through on my way back to the the States, I stopped by Rio to get a feel of the current climate. Arriving from Lisbon just before 18 hs local, I went to Copa, Delirio to be exact, just around 20 hs, to have a look - 3 garotas in the line up. Chose one for 30 minutes before going to Monte Carlo. I would not be surprised if a termas like Monte Carlo is hurting, The Economy is very bad, so most brazilians Do not frequent these termas like they use too, Also there is not alot of mongering tourist like back in the early 2000's to pick up the slack, because the P4 P is somewhat dead, and Traveling to Brazil is expensive.

Back in 2007 and 08, I have made several trips to Brazil and rented apartments for a 3 to 6 month contracts from local Rio property owners for really cheap. At that time, I used to rent it for nearly Real 1200 per month (US $400) for a furnished 1 bedroom near help disco area. Everyday, I used to go out of my mind over deciding what to do each day as I had endless options seven days a week from several escort services, Termas, bars, and Help Disco. The Rio P4P scene was at its peak during 2006-2009. I used to come to Rio for a long 3 to 6 months long vacation to get away from the world and spend my time peacefully in this paradise. Those were the best days of my life.

It looked like you got bored in a month and I don't blame you. The P4P market had not been the same and the attitude of the girls changed due to increased level of competition and lower income. Nearly, all the escort service agencies, Help Disco, few Termas, Balcony bar and other left over options have shut down permanently for the past few years. The economy is not the same anymore. Brazil P4P industry compete with the global p4 p market, thus they increase the prices so they can earn the same amount in US dollars. Just two years ago, a one bedroom in Copacabana was around 600 thousand Reals and now it's 900 k Reals because the owners want to sell it with the same US $ market value. The similar strategy is executed by the Terma or other P4P business owners.

The problem with the footwork is that it requires time to do your research. If someone has time and money to visit Brazil over 2 weeks, more power to you. However, due to the availability of very few options left, I think it's smart to stay there for max 2 weeks and enjoy Rio while it last.

The dollar was not 3 to 1 in 2007 and 2008.

It all depends on perspective but as far as p4p I have to say it has declined or maybe urbanized/gone independent/more girls working 3.4 spots as the big termas arent bringing in the bread.

Dude, I have an MBA so I'll stop there, but just know what we are talking about is a floating currency that isn't pegged to the dollar in a BRICS country (B is for Brazil).

You think that the Real getting decimated in the last few years didn't spurn them raising their prices? Hell yeah it did, of course it did and many hotels / rental apartments went total USD pegged to combat the currency fluctuations.

It's really quite simple. Foreign exchange rates are part of the price mechanism. Sometimes the FX rate leads where local prices more sensitive to international markets will go up. Sometimes FX rates lag whereby the currency devalues because local prices are increasing unsustainably faster than the relative international markets. One thing for sure is there a correlation between prices and the FX rate for an economy like Brasil that is not big enough or independent enough to be immune from this effect.

It's correct that you'll see this effect manifest first in things like hotels and real estate. Particularly in desirable locations in cities and coast front. If you see a currency massively devalue (let's use the recent Argentina experience for example), your best bet is to get down there immediately before local prices adjust. Believe me, the local prices do adjust sooner than later. Good luck trying to get someone to sell you an attractive property at the local currency price set before the devaluation.

So because the prices at the termas went up around the time the real lost its value against the dollar, this means the two are correlated? I would think not. First of all, the decrease you cited happened over a 3 year period. Did the prices inch up little by little over this 3 year period or did they just jump up when the white sheet appeared on the wall? Second of all, there has been a 25% increase in the real against the dollar over the past year. Did prices at the termas fall? Probably not; because they have nothing to do with the real vs the dollar.

Why would they drop it right away when it is only down 20% from the high of a year ago? I wouldn't as hyper inflation of all commodities and services happens in such cases when you have rapid inflation, termas would be no different. I have an MBA so I'll stop there, but just know what we are talking about is a floating currency that isn't pegged to the dollar in a BRICS country (B is for Brazil). I first went in 2009 and 2010 when it was under 2 and everything I thought was expensive then. Now everything is cheaper, so businesses have to raise their prices. Some local or regular tell us the 40 min / 60 min prices back in 09/10. I remember it being like 40-50% less. Why? I just answered that.
