This is encouraging. I was starting to rethink my plans for Rio. I have mongered just about everywhere: Europe, SE Asia, Colombia, Caribbean, but only in Bogota did I feel slightly at risk. I just tried to keep my mongering to the touristy and "safe" parts of Bogota. I'm not interested in risking my life, when I could get a beautiful girl in Spain or Pattaya. Currently, I'm thinking of staying in Copa (likely the Hilton, for points) and going to Eden Spa and Termas Monte Carlo or Centaurus during the day, and MABs or an escort at night. That seems like the safest option. If I'm feeling like the risks are overblown, I'll add the Centro Prives during the day. Anyone else have an opinion on the best day game and night game for first timers in Rio, particularly those of us who don't want to carry a taser?

Centro is generally ok during the day, just keep your eyes open. It changes significantly after dark. I would leave before 8:00 PM or so (of whenever it gets dark depending on time of year). If you get caught up in the fun and find yourself there after it's dark, take a taxi where you need to go. And as others have said, take a taxi right from the Terma or wherever you are. Don't be tempted to walk to catch a taxi or Uber. I have walked from 4 X4 to the Metro station after 10 PM and nothing happened. But in retrospect, it was stupid and I wouldn't do it again.

Stay in Copa or Ipanema and hang out there at night. But even in Copa, you have to be careful walking at night if you're on a side side with little foot traffic.

As far as Barra, I wouldn't bother on a short trip. There is actually plenty of action there and it has a very nice beach and it's safe. It's just too out-of-the way for a short-time visitor to bother with.

Your plan for Rio seems safe. I didn't carry any weapon and survived last year LOL. I stayed at the JW, walked in copa to Monte Carlo and Mabs even at night, but not past 10 pm. I Ubered to 4 x4 twice during the week, no issues either getting in and out at midnight. One time I had to walk to Av. Rio Branco to get the Uber because I was taking a girl back to my hotel and she didn't want us getting on in front of 4 X4, this was past midnight and no issue either.

As far as going to Centro I think daytime is fine, I went twice to Dudas at Av Rio Branco 156 and walked around without issue. Just use common sense and watch where you pull out your phone, lean against a wall if you're worried you'll be approached from behind.

ShinyCrazy, there is very little risk to a RJ visitor as long he uses his common sense, stays aware of his surroundings at all times, does not wear expensive watches or gold jewelry, and most importantly "avoids empty, dark streets at night" as I previously posted, which translates into use uber to get around at night (or local taxis as Nounce suggests). I have applied the same caution in Manila which can also be a dangerous place if one chooses not follow the basic rules or is too drunk to pay attention to his surroundings.

RJ Prives: I prefer to skip the afternoon Prives and I go to the Termas at night because for the most part Prive girls just do not have what I am looking for looks wise, but tastes vary. You should probably go to at least one of the recommended Prives and find out for yourself what it is like and then decide if you like them.

Solarium and 4 x 4 are my favorite Termas in RJ. Solarium, because IMHO they have prettiest terma girls and is therefor my favorite terma. 4 x 4 for the party atmosphere. 4 x 4 is a pretty wild scene, in a totally good way, especially on Thursday and Friday nights. I like the joint. Centaurus on occasion has had some girls I found attractive and so I have met some great girls there and had good times, but it is more expensive than other termas. Lastly, I can't recommend Monte Carlo because I have never met a MC girl that I wanted to shag. It has always been a disappointment for me. But things can change weekly / monthly. YMMV.
