I have to say that I found myself surprised at how safe I felt in Rio. I stayed in Copacabana and walked the streets past 2 am on a few occasions as well as walked around Centro. By the way it is really easy to get turned around in Centro even using Google maps navigation. I was approached on many occasions with people speaking Portuguese and I think one Russian. It seems to be a very multi-ethnic city where even this Irish-Englishman looked like he was a Carioca. While there are many homeless in Copacabana I did not see any crime or police action. The homeless were all sleeping at 2 am.

My mongering approach was to try each of the easily available options: Termas, Massagems and online ads.

Sunday. I arrived on a Sunday and so I went to the Hippie Faire in Ipanema after checking in. Interesting, but I was just checking things out and had no intention of buying anything. I was thinking of trying a online advertisement but I was a little confused about WhatsApp. I didn't realize until later that I could use my US phone number (thank you T-Mobile! And I was told that the TIM store wouldn't be open until Monday. So, as expected Sunday was a quiet one.

Monday. I scheduled the tourist thing. Sugarloaf, Christ Redeemer, steakhouse lunch and the steps tour. Brazil is not Jamaica. You are pretty tough guy until you see a gun or two in front of you and believe me, they will shoot, because your life for them is less worth than even the cost of your empty wallet. Safe travel!

Thank you all for your concern for my safety. It has caused me to think some more about my approach to my safety.

First of all we must have our eyes and mind on the task at hand. When walking about in a strange land or even our home town we must be aware of our environment. Who is around us, where can they be hiding, what are the exits.

Second, we need to recognize it when we are tired or had too much to drink. We will not be able to function well in these states and should withdrawal to a safe space until we are recovered.

Third, we should not be in a hurry to go to a new environment. We should do our research. We should RTFF. We should observe before acting. We should know before we go.

Fourth, we should not put ourselves in the line of fire. Don't approach a group of young men at two in the morning. Be prepared to get out at the first sign of trouble. Don't be alone at night. Take an UBER instead of walking.

Fifth, be lucky. While we should do everything to be safe it may be luck that we must ultimately rely on. It was luck that I wasn't robbed and beaten in the LOS Angeles Rodney King riots. It was luck that I didn't attend the business lunch in San Bernardino during the recent terrorist attack. It is luck I didn't die when my car was rear ended and sandwiched between five cars ahead by a truck on the 10 freeway. It was luck I have not been caught between gang violence in Tijuana. It was luck that I have not been gunned down and made an EJK statistic in the Philippines. It was luck I have not had a fatal illness. It was luck I haven't died in an airline crash. And it was luck that I wasn't shot in Brazil.

Be careful! Just don't feel too confident in Rio just because nothing happened on your first trip. Walking in Copacabana or Centro is far from "pushing the boundaries" in Rio. Sh*t can happen anywhere at anytime in Rio.

As long as you use common sense you should be quite safe. Never show fear, the malandros will smell it just like a pack of dogs.

I'm lucky. 28 years going to Rio and I never got robbed. My main concern is the danger in the traffic. Crossing the street and some a-hole afraid of stopping at red light might hit me.

Thanks for the trip report! As long as nothing happens you will feel safe but that can change in a second. I would advice you to be careful on your next trip and especially when walking the streets (alone) in the middle of the night. I was robbed myself in Copacabana around 2 AM on a Friday night and that was not a nice experience. Three guys came out of nowhere and I had no chance and they took my backpack and one of ther guys hit me hard right in my head. You don't want an experience like that, so stay safe!

I only say that I felt relatively safe in Rio de Janeiro. Comparing my experiences in Jamaica where I went through several robbery attempts. I felt afraid all the time in Jamaica. I felt safe all the time in Rio. But I push the boundaries. That doesn't mean others should follow in my footsteps. I am a pretty tough guy. Military, martial arts, 6'2", I naturally suppress my emotions including fear. People have threatened me, but they have backed down. The two guys following me on a dark beach in Negril Jamaica backed down when I turned around and asked them if they had a problem. The guy trying to snatch my wallet in Montego Bay waved a knife around but backed down. You are right, past performance is not a great predictor of the future as we grow older.
