My god! I miss Rio. The P4 P scene in LOS Angeles is like the Cantina in Star Wars: fat, tatooed, entitled ugly ho's, upsell and cat and mouse. $US200 is about the minimum for anyone remotely presentable, and even then with a plethora of conditions and attitude. With THB=USD 33.56 as at today, THB 1000=$US29.79, LOS is a bad deal. Lojas Americanas was the first place I went. I got a Claro chip and they started the activation process. It was going fine until the clerk ran into the issue with SEP (The clerk finally said the rep told him I can't use a CPF to activate the chip if I'm not Brazilian.

Next day I went to Rio Sul with my passport. Came to the Claro store, but there was a huge line. Went to the TIM store and they sent me to Lojas Americanas for the chip. I was able to finally activate the damn thing, but it took over 2 hours all in all. Didn't know I could do it all online.

Buy one at Lojas Americanas and ask your favorite girl to activate it. She will use her own CPF, I'm sure. All the girls know how to do it. I paid 10 reais for the chip and like Sperto said activating it with a CPF was surprisingly easy. Even if it was the first time for me, it took only few minutes. Then I had to add some credits with my CC. I think not being a Brazilian is just an excuse for not knowing what to do. Regarding TIM chip. If you don't have any CPF, go to a Lojas Americanas and buy a TIM chip from the TIM seller who will activate it for you. Another option is to buy a TIM chip on the street and call TIM and activate it (this option needs patience because there the staff answering might not be the smartest).

If you do have a CPF you can very easily activate the TIM chip yourself in just a few minutes. Along with the chip comes instructions. Something like:

The place to buy TIM chip isn't at a TIM store as they almost always are out of stock. They sell them at pharmacies, Lojas Americanas, the news paper kiosks or street vendors. In December I paid 12 reais. No need to go to Centro.

When I came to Rio 1991 I was very impressed of Brazil. In Rio, specially Copacabana. Almost every restaurant / bar had lots of GPS.
