I think it's just the gringos who take this seriously. My Brazilian friends are a a mixture of black skin color, brown, indians and white. Nobody is offended if I call them words related to their skin color or what could be considered their origin. In Brazil discrimination it's not only about the skin color, but also about their origin. To some people it could be an insult to be called "paraíba" or nordestino. Some might be insulted and others would be proud of their origin.

If somebody really want to insult somebody they would use stronger words, like "carvão".

It's a cultural thing. But that doesn't mean that we always have to accept it. One time when I was in Costa Rica, a tute casually approached me and said in Spanish, "Negro do you have a cigarette"? I angrily responded (also in Spanish), "My name is not negro! My name is Cane!" Ha, I didn't actually use "Cane", but you get my drift LOL! Her response was, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry! I don't know your culture"! I just wasn't in a mood where I wasn't feeling that. Maybe it was a learning experience for her.

Then I recall the time that I was watching some kind of Spanish-language program out of Caracas on TV. There was a host, and like three co-hosts, one of those being a black female. The host introduced the three co-hosts, calling two of them by their first names (like Juan and Elena for example), but then he shockingly introduced the black woman as just "negra", as if she didn't have a first name! Their culture or not, I found that to be pretty offensive and a marginalization of another human being by only introducing her based on her skin color (and she's just beaming away), while everybody else on the stage had a name. Wow.
