I'm from the USA. I've read that I only need my passport, and proof of insurance. Just wondering if there's anything else I might need.

I don't know if the US is different. If you've read the rules, and it says only travel insurance for duration of your stay, like it did for me. In a safezone Europe country, there were no issues at any airports. They check your insurance at every airlines terminal / connection. Have it printed out. Easy peasy.

Yeah I said I may have misread. Really don't matter to me. I'm not a beach bum I'm really only going to Rio bcuz I couldn't have forgiven myself for going to Brazil and not going to Rio and seeing Christ the redeemer. From reading the forum seems like SP is the place for me.

Fairmont at the end of Copacabana staffs people to put on their beach but like Wyatt said its on the other side of the street and not really private. As close to private as you will get if you're concerned about safety.

Any part of the beach can be done safely. Safest is to leave electronics and credit cards in your room, just take the clothes you need and towels, sandals over shoes and what not. Just bring enough cash for some drinks and snacks. But you can bring electronics if you're with a group. Just make sure one person stays with your stuff at all times.

I'll be back in Rio next month. Last visit was in Jan 2020 well before the pandemic. I'm curious if the termas have any new protocols in place (face masks, temp checks upon entry, social distancing, capacity restrictions, use of saunas etc) or if it's business as usual?

I've stayed at Porto Bay and ordered a girl around 5 PM. Front desk called and asked if it was ok to send her up. No charges or extra registration hassle on my end.

As far as hotel itself goes I'm happy to sign off on that as well. I work in hotels and am self described hotel snob since I can sense the real level of cleanliness, always. I was impressed for sure. Nothing spectacular in terms of lay out or furniture but very clean, and the bathroom was actually really nice. Spend the extra money and go for a room with a balcony. You know that whole BJ enjoying the views thing people have talked about. The balcony isn't very private, you can easily see your neighbors and they can see you but at the right time of night its possible.

Thanks for the feed back, that's good to know it's all good especially for a hotel snob LOL. I usually use booking.com they haven't failed me yet. I use my gut and reviews and always email to confirm guest policies. Do they have private beach? I believe I read that or I might be trippin and it may have been another property. I usually go though a like 5 or 6 and do more and more research before I make my final decisions. Thanks for the report. Hope COVID second wave doesn't screw this trip. I planned for November to see what happened but hope I don't wait too long and miss my window. Looking forward to being able to add some experiences to this tread now.

Personally I wouldn't chance it, you never know the owner could be in the same building or the doorman has instructions to stop any visitors, look elsewhere. It used to be before AIRBNB we stayed in apartments but we went through various agents. These agents knew what we were doing in those apartments and had no problem with it. Some of these agents are still around, send me a PM and I'll respond with a recommendation.

I would add that not only would I not chance it, but if the listing doesn't mention these rules, I would still verify with the host that bringing friends is OK (no need to specify your friends' line of business). I would also ensure them that I'm quiet and respectful. Some would disagree with this approach, but I seriously don't want any drama.
