I'll try this TIM method next time. Of course, the ideal way for my peace of mind would be ESim (to avoid carrying 2 phones or buying a 2 Sim cards phone), but I can only imagine the headache.

You will get a Vivo Sim in the Vivo shop near Metro Carioca, it's in the shopping complex in which Bob's fast food is in. Very helpful lady. You need your passport and be aware that the SIM expires after your agreed period.

Yep. Everyone I spoke with in Rio recommended Vivo over TIM. But last time in Rio Sul, they said they'd stopped selling them to foreigners (BS apparently) and sent me to the TIM store. I don't understand why such a simple has to be so complicated.

And BTW, I did have a CPF obtained here in the States, never worked.

I went to a Vivio store in Sao Paulo and they don't sell prepaid there.

My CPF worked but it is now attached to my old phone number that I no longer have. When I tried to use my CPF in app, the app sent a text message to the old phone number to verify me 😕.

I chip in regarding TIM versus Vivo. If you only stay in Rio both will work fine. In some areas, like comunidades, TIM works much better. If you travel around Brazil the difference between TIM and Vivo can be very significant. I always use TIM, mainly because I like their priceworthy offers. BTW, no need to go to Central to buy a sim card. Just go to a Lojas Americanas or buy it in a kiosk.
