As soon as it happened, the men ran upstairs, and the guarda municipal (in beige, desert tan uniforms but without firearms) looked like they were chasing. For some further background, in Uruguiana metro, there had been a shut down of the popular mercado upstairs from the metro for the 3 days previous to this incident. Some have on riot gear, helmets, billie clubs, body armor, but again, no pistols. There are vans outside as mobile command posts. There are dozens of police cars. So, I would think that with all this security, it would be easier to apprehend the gunmen, but apparently not.

After the incident occurred at 12:57 hours, local, and the people started walking around again, 4 police in grey shirts walked down. These are the policia federal. They do carry pistols. A sig sauer 9 mm. One of these policia federal took out his pistol and appeared to check that there was a round in the chamber. The team of four policia federal walk through the middle of the metro station.

So, the question is: what is the response time of police officers with weapons to a shooting in a metro in the middle of Rio de Janeiro? The answer appears to be 15 minutes. That is not reassuring. Guarda municipal with billie clubs and 37 mm riot control guns with tear gas canister are not a match for 3 guys with pistols who shoot and kill a man and run away, scott free. Four armed policia federal with 9 mm handguns showing up 15 minutes after the shooting is not good. A poor showing for Rio; give me NYC cops any day, and those dudes are dead on the escalator.

No, violence in the metro is not normal. In all the years I have been going to Rio, the metro was one place that always was safe. Never even had an issue with pickpockets or the annoying musicians begging for money like you find in Europe. With the economy tanking and unemployment up, it doesn't look good (or safe) for the future.

Got there about 8 pm, entrance R100 (on price list. 4 o minutes R90. Girl R220. Total R410 for 40 minutes) Looks like the entrance has increased unless I was shown the gringo price list? Popped into Solarium on a busy night recently after reading a lot here about how it has the best talent in Rio these days etc.

Costs are now -- without the discount coupon -- something like BRL 470 for 40 minutes and more than BRL 700 (not sure how much more, 720?) for 1 HR. That's with entrada, cabine, etc.

For me, it takes a super hot or super safada, or both, girl to warrant that kind of expenditure. When I entered the boate I saw a lot of what Solarium typically has, which is (bottle) blonde, larger-bunda girls. A few brunettes. And 1 token black girl. I also know that 4-5 years ago I would have walked in there and been like "Holy cow, look at all the hotties! Let's get it on!
