Traffic is going to be a mess this weekend in Copacabana. Av Atlantica will be closed on Saturday for a Paralympic event and Sunday for a triathlon. I believe it is above or nearly above the McDonald's on Hilario De Gouveia, between Nossa Senhora and Barata Ribeiro. FYI that McDonald's was the first one in Latin America (or at least South America), opened in something like 1977. There's a plaque inside commemorating this, if you look carefully.

I have exchanged money on occasion there and the rates are a little off, but nowhere near as bad as you got. That sounds more like the thieves in the US airports, than Rio. Someone saw you coming and decided you would make their day.

I failed to organize my ATM cards before leaving the USA, so when I arrived at the airport in Rio, my cards didn't work. In desperation, I changed $100 in cash at the airport currency exchange. Their rate was 2. 52, which was terrible, and they took 50 Reais as commission, so I barely got 200 Reais for my $100.

In contrast, I later took 780 Reais from an ATM, and my cost was a little over $200.
