Think you got your answer from the silence. I think Monte Carlo and Solarium are as high end as Rio gets and that is a FAR cry from Scandallo and Bomboa. So yeah I'the say nothing vaguely similar. But I like Monte Carlo for a small bar vibe and a smallish but pretty girls selection.

For the daytime:

Compared to the high end clinicas / prives in sao paulo, is there anything like that in rio? I've only found medium & low end prives.

For the nighttime:

I know there's nothing as high end as scandallo in rio or maybe even the entire world, but what would be the closest thing in rio?

If your phone support esim get you can get one before you even land in Brazil. https://www.airalo.com/brazil-esim.

I used this on the last three trips. Cheap and convenient if your phone supports dual SIM.

Just change cellular data to the new esim and you're set.

This is my biggest complaint when I visit Brazil. I even got a cpf and I still couldn't get a sim card from a shop. Your two best options are:

1. Get a girl to buy a sim card for you using here CPF.

2. Buy a TIM sim card and activate it using the English line which you can only access via Portuguese menu (because Brazil). I think it is along the lines of dialing *144 then pressing 3 to activate and then 3 again for the English line. They ask you for your passport number, expiry date, name and city. It doesn't matter if you give them fake info for all of this. I looked at my activation data for one of my sim cards and the completely mangled both my name and passport number but my phone worked fine.

Recharging is also a pain and I found it to be best done via drsim online even with the annoying fee tagged on top of the recharge.

Are you carrying a burner that has a physical sim so that you can add a sim later upon arrival into Rio? If you have a phone that has one physical and one eSIM, then I assume you just swap out your original sim for the new one for Brazil.

Since my phone has two esims, I tried to get my friend to get me a prepaid eSIM (using his cpf) for Brazil but it works out to be too expensive for a just a few days of use. Easier to buy an eSIM online with 5 GB of download for the time I spent there.

I carry two phones. One is my old, but fully functional smartphone that I don't mind losing. For this reason I prefer carrying it outside in Brazil. That's the phone I install a physical card in.

Another one is my current phone. I buy a 1 GB eSIM card for $10 before travel, and it serves me well because I use WiFi wherever I can and Zap is free anyway. I basically only need this 1 gb for Uber and Google Maps, and when it fails to connect to WiFi at the airport.

The only inconvenience is that when I go on tours, or walks, or expect to take pictures otherwise, I still have to take my better phone with me, because the old one's camera is shit. But this setup works for me in general.

I am a regular Rio monger but I have always been in Copa to date. Now I will be in Barra for some weeks and I am wondering what is the best place there to pick up girls during the day? Since I am on European time zone I will be most horny in the morning and early afternoon).

And for the night: is it all termas or massage parlours or is there a similar place like Mabs?

Euro Spa and Eros massagem are both in barra, some good looking girls and prices are 220 for an hour. There is recreio also, when I went it was carnival so selection wasn't that impressive.

I would prefer to metro and head to centro and you will have unlimited selection of prives.

Was in Mabs last week, very poor quality as usual, Friday Saturday and Sunday lot of rain in Rio so very few girls in Mabs, prices 300/400 reais hour.

I found some, was lucky.

I think I see why there is a your mile may vary when it come to ATM. With Wise and Revolut, I guess it depend on your home country, your fee may be different from my. I'm in the US. As for if your ATM will work or not, something have changed last year with Brazilian banking system. My guess is you are no long able to get money from a bank ATM with Visa card. I went to both Visa and Mastercard website, and search their ATM locator. I search for Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro. There one or two Bank ATM with Visa. Where as for Mastercard there is alot of bank ATM. Maybe the reason why Revolut did not work for me was my card was a Visa card.

Any on my next trip I will bring both card from different banks, and will report back. But with a country like Brazil, thing changes from one day to the next.

Senor xpartan, I enjoyed meeting you and to the point for a ISG friend I might just take you a registered chip which I as find is a in demand item and for 50 r at central one can get 5. We had a caiprihinha at barra posto 2 in front of at classicobeachclub where we discussed life in moscow vc nyc if I recall. A good spot to swim as the currents are never strong and the water is clean.

My ask is a tmobile chip that I can register with a phone call or another chip. Or we can discuss by PM, a few items from amazon in the good old EUA, like some phone cases which even after a few years break apart.

I'll take one for all Zohans out there by asking how much time this approach would save me. Specifically, there are two home bases I love to stay at when in Rio: Hyatt in Barra and Hilton in Leme. The first is 10 minutes away from Barra Shopping, the second is 5 minutes away from Rio Sul. Getting a sim card at either mall can take 1-2 hours depending on the crowds and TIM employee's level of ignorance, but you'll get it guaranteed.

Now Uruguaina. Commuting from Barra simply for a Sim card is just ridiculous. The trip from Hilton (if that's my first stop) is doable and will take 1-1. 5 hours RT depending on the traffic.

Of course, if you're going to Centro anyway for an architectural tour of its downtown buildings with their magnificent antique elevator systems, that's another matter entirely. The old, lazy me, however, balks at the prospect of long commutes on his first day in Rio after the 10-15 HR redeye. I'd rather take it easy -- with my phone fully functional.
