Well, never let it be said that the Cartman can't learn new things. Or that you can't teach an old safado new tricks.

Had a first-time visit to the Red Light Club tonight guided by PatmarBeleza, who has been burning up the board with his detailed, useful posts of late. Great stuff!

I'd heard of this place and that it was somewhere in Praca the Bandeira but never really worked up the effort to go. Tonight we tried to catch a bus out there, but the 455 blew past us in Copa, and, well, time is money. So we hopped in a cab. It's about R$25 to get there and the same coming back. I know this because my favorite Brazilian restaurant, Aconchego Carioca, is there on Barao de Iguatemi. And 1 block down the street, a friend is opening a specialty beer bar. Which happens to be across the street from the Hotel Malaga, which is a decent sex motel with reasonable rates. And. Get this. The whole thing is 1. 5 blocks away from Red Light Club. How could I not know that for 2+ years?

Anyway, RLC is set up in a narrow building with 4+ floors. The first floor has the Caixa and a long bar with square tables, no music. Nobody was there when we arrived around 8. 30pm. When I left at 11. 30pm, there were 3-4 dudes drinking down there and a sweaty drunken hooker falling over her co-workers. Drama!

The second floor has a smaller bar area, same square tables, and the end of the room set up as a stage with some poles and space for pagode / live music. It also had blaring funk before the pagode started, with the same type of dude yelling into a microphone. Just like at 502. It's a reasonable place to watch the chicks dance, but loud to hang out and talk.

Upstairs there are toilets and then the whole back of the 3rd floor has been transformed into an open-air smoking area with a smaller bar. No music. Great place to hang out with a chick to have a chat. Because it's open air, the smoke isn't as overpowering as in other smoking areas like 4x4's or 502's. I ended up buying my chosen beauty a whiskey (R$22, big spender!) and sitting with her there for a while during which she lectured me in the problems with Brasilian politics. Hi-larious! My favorite part was when she made fun of Dilma for saying people should call her "Presidenta". My chick was all,"Presidente e Presidente. Nao tem feminino." Told me she voted for Jose Serra in the last election. She's 22. Good on 'er!

Anyway, the rooms are on the 4th floor and I think they may also have there on the 5th floor the dressing rooms / area for the chicks. The rooms are small and come with a small bed (raised off the floor) and a shower / toilet area. The rooms themselves and the shower / toilet were not 100% disgusting. I'd say at or above 502 quality, which is actually OK. But the pillows left something to be desired. One had no pillowcase and looked heinous. I'm like, jeez, spend R$20 and buy a new pillow. Anyhoo.

Solid performance by my girl, who says she doesn't speak to a lot of gringos. The place is kind of a hangout for Brazilian posters on a Brazil gdp forum, so I understand that. Apparently I remain "gostoso". Go Cartman! She texted me some Brazilian rock groups I need to download, so we may have a "music lesson" to be arranged in person.

Thanks to PatmarB for the hat tip. If you're in town with time to spare and are tired of the Centro / Zona Sul scene, I'd recommend it. Apparently it really gets hopping late especially Fridays when a lot of freelancers show up after midnight. Chicks are in skimpy dresses, pulling them up to show off their asses etc, but no bikinis etc.

I know this is Rio Thread, but as long as I live in Barcelona, I couldn't help but answering this. Never seen nor heard of anything similar to Rio vans in Barcelona or any other european city for the matter, but be very sure that you can get taxis in Barcelona (black and yellow, the ONLY taxis you will see around) anywhere in the city, as long as they are free at the moment (little green light on top). Designated stands, of course, exist, but 8 out of 10 times you will hail any free taxi in the street and you will jump in.

On the other hand, I agree with you about banning the vans. Good decision.

Have a good hunt. I can't wait to be back in Rio in a few weeks.

Not trying to be disagreeable but I have been to Barcelona many times and never saw taxis picking anyone up in the street. After several passed me giving me dirty looks when I tried to flag them down, I gave up and walked to designated areas. When I asked the locals (in Spanish) about catching taxis in the street they told me to go to the designated areas.

When Rio got the Olympics I suggested to the powers that be that they visit Barcelona. In my opinion, Barcelona manages tourism better than any other city in the world.

(Centro terma BelPrazer is only one that impressed me with equipe, but duplas are 210R, instead of 150R at tijuca prives. Plus, after you've done multiple duplas, you and the girls know the playbook by heart for that 60 minutes. I will stick with my main three.)

If you want to stop being thought of as a third-world country, then you have to stop behaving like a third-world country.

This means everyone, not just a few progressive thinkers.

I live in New York and they have vans in Queens and Brooklyn. They are real convient and faster than busses.

Hi,

I would like to share my first experience with Rio's famous Balcony girls.

After arriving Saturday evening in Rio the first day for some adventure was the Sunday. All Termas seemed to be close on Sunday, except Monte Carlo on Copa, at least that's what the web site told. So, heading to the Monte. But, surprise, surprise, it was also closed. What a frustration for me and my friend, not knowing alternatives. The famous Balcony was only two blocks away. Despite the warnings and negative reviews, we gave it a try. What could happened, I thought.

What happened was a big and positive surprise. Fiveteen girls were around at 5 pm Ok, some crazy sluts, but you can avoid them, by not getting in eye contact.

A MILF at the bar with fairly good English approached my friend. Very nice and good looking. After some time the deal was done. 280 Reais for the night. Not too bad, ha?

Now, I had to find my catch of the day. A good looking blond came in and took her place at the bar. After a nice introduction by one of the servants, I found myself talking to this classy girl. The deal was set after some minutes. Three hours for 200 Reais. Not as good as my pal, but I don't want a complete night, and the rate was still great, compared to home.

The evening went very good. Great conversation at the apartment with some wine, a nice shower (water) and very good entertainment in the bed. After three hours and money for the taxi (I am Old School!) she went away.

My friend had the same luck with his lady. She stayed until 7:00 and got some extra.

What do you learn from this story? I don't know, but that was not my last time at the hunting ground Balcony.
