AA has direct flights to Fortaleza, Salvador, Recife, and BH. Their infrastructure may not be equal to the USA, but I was impressed. The problem with visiting other cities is there are no direct flights from US cities or hubs. Once you make a long flight to Brasil on a US carrier, you're not willing to transfer to a Brasilian domestic carrier to travel to a off the path Brasilian airport. Brasil has spent very little money in upgrading their airport system.

what is going on in rio is pretty simple. the government (and it is the government not some religious group) needs to show the world that rio has changed or is in the process of changing and that they are in control. they started out by cleaning up the favelas which by most measures was successful. now they want to eliminate the most visible elements of prostitution. visible to the outside world, that is.
