Was just cruising around "Google Earth" and discovered the "street view" of Rio and "HELP." If you look closely, you can see that demolition has begun, so the photo must have been taken only 2 or 3 days AFTER it closed as within very few days "HELP" and "Sobre as Ondas" had been reduced to a large hole in the ground. I was there, I remember.

Good days of Rio are gone! I used to live in Copa in the 70's. I knew Help from the beggining and it was great!

São Paulo is much better for mongering now, the clinicas and the privês offer you very good choices. And prices are much better than in Rio.

This is what happens when you don't have a place like Help for mongers and gdp's to go WITH a cover charge. This place will only get worse. When you allow every ugly gangster ghetto chick in a place with no cover, your place will eventually be a ghetto. Period. I went to Help 70 to 80 nights over my travels there. Does anyone know the exact location at the airport where one can pay and get a ride to Ipanema / Copa? I usually grab a taxi, but I am curious and would like to try the bus option and see if it is worth the hassle in order to save the $.

The company name is Real Bus (they are blue busses). Exit the arrivals area at either Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 and ask anyone for the Real Bus. Lines form to the right-most end of the taxi lines. Cost is R$ 12 to Copacabana / Ipanema. Busses circulate with a scheduled frequency of every 20 minutes. Travel time is 45 min to 1 hour depending on traffic.

As you exit the international arrival area, turn right and wade through the phalanx of people waiting for people, go outside to the sidewalk and continue to your right. Eventually (not THAT far really) you will see signs the say something to the effect of "ONibuS PARKING ONLY" and there will probably be one or more new looking large "tour" type buses parked there. Ask the attendants which one goes to Copa and get in line.

I almost always use the bus to Copa. Its only real downside is the time it takes from the airport to Copa. Since the route goes through San Cristavao (sp?) , past Novo Rodoviaria, Centro, and on to Santos Dumont before heading to Copa / Ipanema, depending on traffic, it can take a fair amount of time. But it's a comfy bus.
