What gets overlooked is how much the "moradores" (people who live in the apartments over balcony) hate the place. I have a friend who rents out a nice furnished apartment on the top floor of that buliding, and when you go on the deck, you stare right down at Balcony's tents and at night all the people. Given the way real estate is going in Rio, both for rents and for sales, you had better believe that there is a TON of pressure from the local residents to move the place out so it doesn't keep fucking their property values. I agree with this. The real issue is not morality about P4P, but the economics. Rio's Portugese Puritans aspire to have their city have the same economics as NYC, so P4P should have the same economics and profile. Given the way real estate is going in Rio, both for rents and for sales, you had better believe that there is a TON of pressure from the local residents to move the place out so it doesn't keep fucking their property values. I'd almost wager that they are behind getting the police to set up this "sting" as opposed ot any moral smoke screen around the Olympics etc and cleaning up Brazil's image. If anything, that is the cover, I'd bet, to the locals paying off the police to do something like this.

The day before yesterday Jornal Nacional showed a newsreport about Balcony. The news crew spent 2 months checking out Balcony. Conclusion: child prostitution and drugs being sold right on the outside.

Most parts were filmed with a hidden camera. They showed interviews with GP's. 16 and 17 years, telling how they fake their I'd's. Also a boy of 15 working as a traveca. They spoke with two gringos (one of them an old german guy speaking lousy portuguese).

There are a lot of drugs being sold. The GP's helps the traficantes to get customers. In exchange the GP's gets security from the traficantes. They interview a traficante "Batata" who explains how a girl brings the drugs from the favela and how he sells it. The police says the problem with the traficante is that they carry to small amounts ("for personal use") to get a sever punishment.

The local police chief, Márcio Mendonça, asked the prefeitura for revocation of Balconys business license. They want to close down Balcony to get rid of the problems.

A news report like this will get a lot of reactions (nothing that some bribes will solve). The cariocas get disgusted and angry when gringos abuse their women and children. Balcony is a disgrace for the cariocas. I think Balcony will have to close down soon.

The strip club is Pussy Cat, rua Belford Roxo 92. To the left of this is Bob's and to the right is rua B. R. 86 and one more is B. R. 72. I think this may be the address to which you are referring. One potential drawback is the public school (Escola Municipal Roma) directly across the street. Even though the hours may not be in conflict, it is a showstopper if the neighbors object.

I lived in the building above the strip club for a month in a temporary apartment when I moved to Rio. The problem with the location is all the residential buildings above it on that street, and on the other side of the square. Balcony catches hell from the residents in the apartment building above it, too. I highly doubt that any of the neighbors would allow something new like this to open. The old places are grandfathered in and still they are trying to close them.

I can't find a street address, but from scanning some brazilian boards, the street is Ceara in Vila Mimosa. Take a metro to Sans Pena and ask for a cab to get you there. This is actually what the Brazilians are saying on their boards. I actually just walk from Motel Malaga, yep, at night. Even the Brazilians are saying this is dangerous, though.

The Brazilians on their boards are also saying that Mosaico is closest in atmosphere to the old Help. Never went to old help, but saw some Buttman pics there, and I think that Mosaico is similar in atmosphere.

See attached. Sao Cristovao is closest. Even better is 455 or 457 bus, or some of the other in that number series going out to Tijuca from Centro / Copa.

I strongly suggest doing the 455 bus from Av Nossa Copa during the day, and practicing getting off at the right stop, and walking right to Mosaico.

As I said, military police regularly come into the club. So, once you are in the club, I think you are relatively safe.
