Brazil spends far too much on social welfare, but on retired and old people, not on single mothers. The average single mother has NO welfare benefits. There is employment today in Brasil, but it is highly contested and they earn chicken feed unless they have advanced qualifications.

Working flexible hours in order to maintain a young family, in the absence of viable support, is indeed an option for some of the girls, hence the attraction of the oldest profession in the world, with or without a "drug using boyfriend".
