One thing I have noticed in Brazil in my years living here. Complaints of any shape or form in any establishment are just a waste of time. The way they do business in Brazil is very inefficient and un customer friendly. What one would think is common sense in any other country is just not followed in Brazil.

when i left off, i was having a dispute over services at luomo. here is the continuation.

this is a report on last night.

Back in Rio. Here is a report on Friday night, or the latter part of it.

I agree with using the miles and have done but only for upgrades. The way miles usage is described below, you usually have to really plan ahead and have to live in an airport hub.

The strategy to open and close credit cards describe by Daniel69 may work for some, but it can have significant down side on your credit history and your ability to borrow when you really have to. Closing a card does not erase it from the credit history, but in fact may be considered a sign of 'increased risk'.

I don't want to pretend like anyone's travel agent or financial advisor, so I'll stop here and hopefuly someone knows how to move this to the Travel section.

MILE REWARDS are your best deal for flying ANYWHERE in the World for cheap and they are easy to get! A friend turned me onto them after my first trip to Rio and, with a little reluctance (thinking the deals would be a time consuming pain in the butt) , I discovered they were easy to get, and most satisfying (just like GDP's)!

BONUS MILES are the only way to travel, you just have to do a little legwork in the beginning and jump on the right deals when they're hot. And always remember to close out your card after the miles hit your account so you do not incur the credit card renewal fee (which is waived the first year) , that's another key. Also, after you close out all your cards with one bank (e. G. Citibank) you can re-apply for new bonus miles cards a year later, which is what I'm doing now.

I totally agree! I for one use travels to DR, Colombia and Panama (all cheap from Miami) to build up miles throughout the year to get me to Rio. Its good for just doing once a year trips to Brazil, but, capitalizing on bonus points would be even better.

This is very important anywhere. You can not be afraid to put your foot down and establish your authority at the beginning of any relationship. Without browsing through 1000's of posts, anyone know where to go to get the best deals on a flight+hotel in Rio?

I don't want to spend more than $700-$800 on a flight since my total budget would be $2k.

I've been reviewing destinations such as Havana, Sosua DR, and now I'm also interested in Rio. I'll be making my choice at the end of March to leave mid-April.

Any advice is appreciated.

Here are the airfare costs I paid for my past 5 trips to Rio, all departing JFK and arriving in GIG.

First trip cost $802 via TAM Airlines booked within 3 weeks of a September departure.

Second trip cost $919 via AA (American Airlines) booked within 2 months of a March departure.

Third trip cost $61 (Taxes only!) via AA booked with 40K MILE REWARDS within 4 months of a September departure.

Fourth trip cost $56 (Taxes only!) via AA booked with 60K MILE REWARDS within 2 months of a December departure. And I was also able to extend the trip another month (thru Carnaval no less) for $0 because because the flight was on MILE REWARDS. Otherwise I would have had to pay a $200 change fee.

Fifth trip (just returned from last week) cost $61 via AA booked with 50K MILE REWARDS within 5 months of an October departure. I was also able to change the departure date twice for $0 because the flight was on MILE REWARDS.

MILE REWARDS are your best deal for flying ANYWHERE in the World for cheap and they are easy to get! A friend turned me onto them after my first trip to Rio and, with a little reluctance (thinking the deals would be a time consuming pain in the butt) , I discovered they were easy to get, and most satisfying (just like GDP's)!

A couple of years ago Citibank was offering 25 to 30k American Airlines bonus miles when you signed up for their Visa, Mastercard, or Amex personal cards, plus Visa or Mastercard Business cards, and spent $750 within the first 4 months. So I signed up for 5 different cards (about 3-4 months apart) and put my utility bills and other common big expenses (including business purchases) on the cards, paid them off immediately (so I wouldn't incur interest fees) , received more than 125k bonus miles, and then promptly closed out the cards (you don't lose the bonus miles, they accrue and stay in your AA Advantage account). I subsequently signed up for a TD Ameritrade account that gave me 15k miles and a Citibank checking account that gave me 20k miles. This is how I flew to Rio my last three trips for free and only paid the airport tax ($56 to $61)! Plus I had tickets that were so flexible I could extend my departure date up to 4-5 months at no extra charge (an additional $200 value right there).

If you travel to Rio during High Season (January to March) you'll eat up about 30k miles each way if you book a few months in advance. If you wait until the last few weeks or days to book, seats will cost more bonus miles (up to 60k each way) so I always book well in advance to spend the least amount of bonus miles. That's why I was able to leave for 20k miles and return for 30k during high season. But if you book a trip in late March or September (a nice time to see Rio because there are less tourists and the GDP's are cheaper too) you can fly for 20k miles each way.

BONUS MILES are the only way to travel, you just have to do a little legwork in the beginning and jump on the right deals when they're hot. And always remember to close out your card after the miles hit your account so you do not incur the credit card renewal fee (which is waived the first year) , that's another key. Also, after you close out all your cards with one bank (e. G. Citibank) you can re-apply for new bonus miles cards a year later, which is what I'm doing now.
