This is my second year in Rio. Such a blast I had last year I thought I'd return. A year on the lure of the girls has dulled a little. Rio merchants, restaurants and taxi drivers keep on gouging and soon you will have no tourists here. On the plane to Rio December 30, based upon the line at immigration about 90% of the passengers were Brazilian. Went to Siqueira Grill tonight and it was about 50% full. Why? Prices up 25% and R$13 Caipirinhas could have had something to do with it. Taxis on New Year’s Eve were asking R$50 to go anywhere. People were just walking away and taking the bus.

One of the reasons I am doing business in Brazil is because Brazilians suck at marketing, management and economics. Interestingly enough there is technology infrastructure in place (which they have no clue how to use).

Keep it up Brazilians and the World Cup and Olympics will be minor blips on an investment for which you will never get a return.

That's some good insight. In my impression, Brazil's economy is mostly speculation. Embratur, the official tourist agency for the government, is barely 2 years old. So they do not have the best marketing and planning professionals. There focus is not Rio de Janeiro, because too many poor cariocas from impoverish regions have over-run the tourist areas. My contacts in Embratur say they are promoting places like more European oriented Florianopolis, Santa Catarina...yuck! Of course the folks in Embratur are European descendant Brazilians, rather than the morenas and others.

I should be there Tuesday!!! I can't wait ... As far as it is being reported, the entrance fee is still BR 40 and they waive the entry fee if you session before 5:00pm. I guess I'm going to have to get up early

Been here for two weeks and haven't had a problem, due to diligence and following advice from some of the mongers on this forum.

However...

Firstly, Brasil is a world leader in the use of condoms and the fight against sexually transmitted diseases including HIV. This is attested on many professional forums and conferences and many, many papers (example). So statistically you are better off than in many countries. Especially better than most developing countries (many of which have a poor condom implementation record, whether by their own stupidity or 'aided' by GW Bush's short-sighted programs, to name a few). It's on a par with the West.

But statistics don't help if you are unlucky. Condoms are very freely available, in VM as everywhere else in Brasil, together with prominent safer sex notices. But the practice still depends to a large extent on the male. Which is the first implied and erroneous assumption - the idea that responsibility can somehow be delegated to a female and, fingers crossed with a wing and prayer, she's clean.

The second implied and seriously erroneous assumption is that paying more money or having sex in more hygienic surroundings reduces the risk of catching a sexually transmitted diseasse. Of course, it doesn't. Or perhaps a class thing - that a girl from a poorer background is more likely to have a sexually transmitted disease - again, untrue. Social parameters affect health generally, but the classifications that apply in many countries (eg USA) do not apply in Brasil. For instance, ". . . studying AIDS cases during the 1980s among adult women from the municipality of Rio de Janeiro found an even higher percentage of the disease among family women than among prostitutes." (Koifman et al quoted here). Drug injecting practices are perhaps one of the identifiable factors however.

Hidden support mechanisms also have an effect. There is a very active network of safe sex support in VM (as there is most main areas where prostitution occurs in Rio). Warnings, health care, condom availability and general awareness.

I am not saying you are more likely to pick something up in 4x4, but there are many instances of mongers who have reported some terma girls' willingness to go bareback once they get to know you. I've yet to hear of a VM girl offering sex without protection (and have never been offered it, in hundreds of sessions).
