Prices at 4 X 4 went up by BR10. So if you session for one hour, the going rate is now BR 220 ! So far there has not been an Olympic sized rise in prices, but I am not holding my breath. I should be there Tuesday!!! I can't wait ... As far as it is being reported, the entrance fee is still BR 40 and they waive the entry fee if you session before 5:00pm. I guess I'm going to have to get up early

From what you say about VM and from what I know about sexual health promotion in Brazil generally, it would appear that the country is really an exception in this regard. I just wanted to check if the 'social parameters' test as applied elsewhere would be equally true in Brazil.

However, even if I pick a healthy looking garota, what are my chances of picking up a STI versus say a garota in 4X4 or a Clinica?

Paddy - I'm sure you realise as much as anyone the incongruities in your post, but it's the sort of question almost anyone might ask. I wonder if I can try to answer sensibly (Sperto has jumped on a plane afaaik).

Firstly, Brasil is a world leader in the use of condoms and the fight against sexually transmitted diseases including HIV. This is attested on many professional forums and conferences and many, many papers (example). So statistically you are better off than in many countries. Especially better than most developing countries (many of which have a poor condom implementation record, whether by their own stupidity or 'aided' by GW Bush's short-sighted programs, to name a few). It's on a par with the West.

But statistics don't help if you are unlucky. Condoms are very freely available, in VM as everywhere else in Brasil, together with prominent safer sex notices. But the practice still depends to a large extent on the male. Which is the first implied and erroneous assumption - the idea that responsibility can somehow be delegated to a female and, fingers crossed with a wing and prayer, she's clean.

The second implied and seriously erroneous assumption is that paying more money or having sex in more hygienic surroundings reduces the risk of catching a sexually transmitted diseasse. Of course, it doesn't. Or perhaps a class thing - that a girl from a poorer background is more likely to have a sexually transmitted disease - again, untrue. Social parameters affect health generally, but the classifications that apply in many countries (eg USA) do not apply in Brasil. For instance, ". . . studying AIDS cases during the 1980s among adult women from the municipality of Rio de Janeiro found an even higher percentage of the disease among family women than among prostitutes." (Koifman et al quoted here). Drug injecting practices are perhaps one of the identifiable factors however.

Hidden support mechanisms also have an effect. There is a very active network of safe sex support in VM (as there is most main areas where prostitution occurs in Rio). Warnings, health care, condom availability and general awareness.

I am not saying you are more likely to pick something up in 4x4, but there are many instances of mongers who have reported some terma girls' willingness to go bareback once they get to know you. I've yet to hear of a VM girl offering sex without protection (and have never been offered it, in hundreds of sessions).

But back to the real responsibility and how he can take it seriously - ie the monger. In VM you will not always have good lighting conditions to examine for track marks or obvious signs of illness. You may be less prepared, less aware, less on your guard. Or maybe not. It depends on you. As for going down on a lady, I use the same rule everywhere - if it smells nice, tastes nice, and I want to, then I may well go for it. A bad smell or taste is offputting - although it is only possibly indicative of a small range of sexually transmitted diseases and may be indicative of none. But good taste and safe sex do not always (or hardly ever) overlap.

One thing I would say about VM is that girls are in a more independent environment. You can pick up a lot of things from their social interactions (with you and each other) that would be airbrushed out of existence in 4x4.

This is not an answer one way or the other about your 'likelihood' of picking up a sexually transmitted disease in VM. Any more than it is an answer about whether you are more likely to get sunburnt on Copa or Ipanema beach.

The advice, as always, is wear sunscreen.

In my opinion is right after they open. Most of them open by 10:00am so, I usually am at hteir doors no later than 10:30 for some fun. This is where I take advantage and do my duplas and so on for a very decent price (Less than BR200). If you dig throught the forum, try the ones Rio Branco 156. Someone made a really great map with casas you could try.

I have seen that a lot of fresh talent tends to come in ~5pm, but of course, so do a lot of punters, in the centro termas.

Help was a middle-class kids' disco. Something like Nuth. Back in the 1980s and early '90s. It's where today's Lapa set hung out. They even had teen matinés back then.

I agree it was between 20 and 40 dollars. There was definitely a pro scene but mostly in places like Barbarella and Erótica. On the beach, Mabs was a big hangout and there were several other places as well. But the scale was totally different.

It's been a long tine but I do remember one data point where I met an incredible number in Erótica, home for the night then she went home to get clothes and hung around all that day until I had to catch a flight that night. Total GFE from Fortaleza. Her wildest dream was to get $100 which I didn't quite satisfy. As has
been said, cash was a problem. No ATMS, so you had to bring cash or travellers checks which were not good because they were exchanged at the official rate so you lost 40%. So you needed to bring cash and I always seemed to under estimate because you needed to pay everything in cash. If you put the hotel on a credit card, they would use the official rate and bump it up to their estimate of what the official rate would be when it settles. So you didn't pay with cc. The rates changed so fast I changed money twice a day, usually with the bellboy. (This is a composite of somewhat vague memories from the late 80s to early 90s.)

Anyway, I gave her all my remaining money which brought the whole thing to maybe $50. I'm pretty sure a programa with a Mabs girl in one of the short time places in Lido was $30 which included $10 for the hotel.

My membership is up and I will not be renewing. I had an incredible week. I have been dating a beautiful young mulata lady in the town where I own a home in Brasil. I was dating others but stopped seeing them as I really enjoyed her company the most. Just a lovely young lady that is studying English, and focused on making a better life for herself. She is terrific.

At any rate, perhaps it is the whole New Year's vibe thing, but the other night I made her dinner and she starts asking about my business trips around Brasil, my trips to Sao Paulo and Rio. I am an honest and forthright person. I had told her upfront that I was really involved in some business projects that will require a great deal of my focus and was not looking for a committed relationship. So I decided to tell her about my mongering activities. I knew this might risk losing her but I really felt like talking about this as it was in the forefront of my mind. I guess I have been reflecting as part of the whole end of year self evaluation we all seem to do. To my great surprise she really was understanding and we even discussed the different attitudes/types of mongers. Truth is I have long been conflicted with some of the attitudes some guys have towards the working ladies. I have made that known here.

At any rate, she actually told me that she wanted to experiment with me. She has been bi-curious and wanted to experience a woman too. My stories of duplas really turned her on. I rode it the first day. I was amazed that they actually had it running. Conventional wisdom was that the station would open, but the trains would come later. They had some glitches, like the maps not being updated, turnstiles not working that morning (so I Got a free ride!) and the trains were running slow but it was open.

The residents of Ipanema have mixed feelings. It is great for getting around, but it also makes it easy to get TO Ipanema. I think I detected a larger than usual beach crowd this weekend around Texeiro de Melo, maybe because of people riding the metro? People are worried it will change things and not for the better. We'll see.

But it is great for getting downtown.

That's good stuff right there. Lack of metro availability was my ONLY lament for staying in Ipanema in the past. Looks like where I'll be going residing my next trip.
