A friend in Rio sent me this article - Help will remain open until the New Year!

Posts: 48I literally had exited Centaurus 15 seconds before the juice went out on Tuesday. It was about 1015, I was going to grab something to eat and pack as I was leaving on Wednesday night. I had the feeling to grab some food and water and grab a cab to my hotel (first night ever in a hotel in Rio. coincidence).
I have been in a blackout in Rio before, but it usually is minutes at the most. As I drove back to Copa, just the traffic lights being out in Copa got me thinking, and it was really dark. I was imagining Centro, and then the 85% of the city that would be more dangerous to B.
In the hotel, it was pitch black. Lesson to everyone, have a tiny flashlight. I was lucky that I downloaded the flashlight app on my iPhone and had plenty of juice. I walked up the steps to my room, literally got ready for the night, and came down with my ipod dock that was fully charged (and thankfully had fm radio). There a few of us sat in the hotel lobby listening to various channels for updates. The rampant speculation and total lack of accountability for sources and truth in news reporting (or appearance of, my Portuguese is not perfect when it comes to subtleties) facsinated me.
In the hotel, there was a problem and the staff called for an ambulance for a younger girl. yeah, no ambulance, makes you realize. It was dark, talk of several days, etc. Cell service and data service on the BlackBerries was very intermittent.
Midnight past, and Help seemed to be done, perhaps my last night ever and it would be gone (we seem to know more now, Carnival no guarantee but Reveillon looks ok, I'll be back). Wondering more now "if" my night would ever come back, and not "where" I would be going.
Around 1230, word came that the juice was back on in Sampa, and things were not going well around many barrios in Rio. I was thinking. why couldn't I have been stuck in Centaurus?!!!
I wasn't feeling all that well, I needed to recharge a bit anyways. And there we were, by candlelight in the hotel lobby, having some waters. I was the only gringo that was hanging out. One thing was for sure, no one was leaving the hotel, and one by one, everyone came back. Not sure how necesarry that was, but it seemed like it wasn't worth it to head out to "chase it". There will be another day.
Although I was certainly tempted.
There was an eerie feeling there with the sirens going around Copacabana. I could imagine a city where the driving is much worse (Buenos Aires for example, I actually find driving quite normal in Rio) having this happen. Overall, one of the first times I didn't have the total feeling of security. Thinking back to the film City of God when little Ze and his older friends knocked off a hotel, why not my hotel, why not if this goes into the wee hours. opportunistic crime. the door was clearly open.
Overall, the true unknown is what was bothering me. Important meeting in the states at 830 am on Thursday, would I get out on Wed night? Would I do anything on my last night on this trip? As each minute after the first ten went on, you really felt that anything could happen, as it always can in this wonderful city.
At about 115 or so, the lights came on to a thunderous roar in Copa. I left the radio with the front desk and said. see ya!
I was at the front door of Help in less than two minutes. I was the FIRST to newly arrive. I felt as if what was taken away from me truly was given back and my glorious return for what at the time could have been my last night would again. be a glorious farwell.
I saw that most of the people at Terraco Atlantico were still there, in the dark, just chillin. Even those lights came back on. You then saw all the bartenders, garcons, etc., in their street clothes scurrying around the front.
I was pscyhed.
You literally would look both ways down Atlantica and see people you recongnized, Euros and Americanos. and all the garotas. just converging on the future site of my least favorite museum in Brazil. I looked back. and one of my "friends" who works there asked me.
"o que voce vai fazer hoje da noite? "
What?!!! what am I doing tonight?
I was floored. it was like game 7 of the 2001, World Series, I just can't take these ups and downs. I stood there watching for five minutes in disbelief, fully in denial, hoping that something would cause it to change.
But alas, it was sensical, it wasn't even open, it was past one. and they weren't on my scheulde. Anyways, if the club is open 363 days this year, I of course will be there for both days it wasn't.
None of that changed the fact of where I was at that point in time, and I clearly am a determined individual not to be denied.
I saw a few normal cabs kind of hovering out front. I saw one guy was probably early 30s, just looking for a fare. I pointed him my way. and off we went.
Now it was late into the morning on a Tuesday night, so not many options, I said head towards Prado Junior. and we discussed options, but that really seemed the best. As we passed that street, we could see Erotika was open, but I wanted to go to Barbarella's first, to me by far. ready for this.
The most UNDERRATED boite in Rio de Janeiro. as long as you know what it's for and you know how to deal with it, it is literally and factory for new and hot box, the girls are serious and will not trya nd rip you if you clearly aren't going to be ripped and aren't playing around too much. and Jorginho is an amazing DJ.
I went in. and it turned out it never closed. they just hung out, figured it was better to just stay there.
Shortly after I arrived, I had a drink, a tall smoking hot blonde next to me and a stunner dancing on the stage on my other side. I was just fine thanks. told her I wasn't doing anything until maybe 4am. so go to work but talk as much as you want, and she stayed. was really cool, I even bought her a drink.
I had planned to go to the other places, but I lacked time, and really. Barbs was deep with talent just to look at and chat with, and I knew a bunch of them so it was a good time.
Wound up thinking I would pass on the night, chalk it up as a night salvaged and a night to remember, knowing I had an "appointment" for a termas run on the way to Galeao for my last few hours that would give me the 100% mandatory leave Rio on an amazing note or else risk depression on return.
I literally was at Barbs past four.
At 230, I saw the blonde and a friend leaving. I told her the deal. I'm not giving her Barbs prices tonight. but if she wanted to go to work. and would be done in the 430 range, call my Brazil #, hang up, (at 415), I would call back, and I would confirm that should could come to my hotel for 300. Yeah you all think that's even crazy for this hour. but it's not transactional to me, lots of build up and I just knew she would act like she had something to prove. and why not make some money?
On cue. got the call a little after four when I was in the bathroom before leaving Barbs (they actually even gave me a free drink!). told her I'll be there in 10 and I would wait in front.
Beat her there by two minutes, and proceeded.
To have my world rocked. in a way, I usually hate bringing girls home from help and only once (on xmas night at 11pm mind you) ever brought a girl out of a prado junior type place (get the numbers and do it another day during the day, much better, get to know them a bit. works so much better in my opinion), and I usually HATE bringing girls out of Help. but I didn't have enough time to get too drunk and because the night started late, I still felt pretty fresh.
Man. that was fun, and will see her again next month. if time allows of course. she wanted to sleep. I said no way. I need to sleep. go home!
Haha. as it goes in Rio, often you can't get rid of them.
Wednesday turned out to be a sneaky nice beach day, and I was off to Cancun at 245, cleaned up and repacked there, nice hour in the room with my long lost catch there who is back. and boom. off to the airport, in a suit on Thursday morning and no one had a clue.
As it goes in a Cidade Maravilhosa.
At least I learned a new word. Apagao *sorry, not going to the Portuguese keyboard, I'm too lazy.
In Cancun, a lot of the girls actually stayed there. My girl there said it was really dangerous outside there. They also had emergency generators for essentials, so they basically closed down, but had some lights and the girls slept in the beds. now why coudln't I have been stuck there!
Overall, an interesting experience I managed to salvage and looking back, I missed the disco but I'll have another shot. it seems.
The radio talk shows (got a glimpse in a few cab rides, the cab drivers there are like the US, they all listen to talk radio it seems), were all over it of course. Clearly sad that people died in violence (conflicting reports at the time of how many). The other topics really seemed to be "why are we not prepared" and "what will the world thing about us hosting the World Cup and Olympics" after this. and finally. "Why on earth do we not have answers".
Lulas quote was great in O Globo on Friday, roughly translated when asked will this happen again, he said, "if God wants it to happen again, it will". Any Brazilian should be proud of their power system, but nothing is built perfect.
Anyways. that was that.
Anyone else have any good Blackout stories?

I read a post a while back about all the clubs being closed for the Holidays. It seemed to be a number of days in a row but I don't remember what days they were?

Hated the manager's attitude, the fact that you had to pay upfront for everything (even if you ended up not sessioning), the fact that I had to go back down to pay more for a dupla (hey - I said it was the first termas I ever hit and the women were so abundant and beautiful I had trouble deciding), their tourist tax, the bottom feeder ladies that latch onto you at dressing room. I had a question for them in English and they ignored it until I finally would not let the person behind me get to the window and pay. I then got a hasty, nasty response. I probably would have left if I was not with someone. But my session was first rate with 2 stunners. Really haven't felt the need to return. I usually can find someone with the looks and personality that I find attractive in MC, Luomo or 4 x 4. I also have not experienced the sausagefest crowds that I read about here - with the exception of one Sunday night in Luomo about 75 minutes before closing. But I lucked out there too as I was heading into the bar just as a young tall sweetie was making her way back in. I quickly surveyed the situation and saw it was at least a 2 to 1 men to GDP ratio. Not good odds. So I offered her a drink as we walked in and was in a cabine for a very memorable GFE session with her within 10 minutes. I was very horny and it was Sunday late night. My version of yelling "Shotgun".

But I must admit, I have expensed termas visits as travel and entertainment expenses as they show up as some bar and grill on your charge. I just didn't eat a big dinner that day -- or a meal anyway!

I'm a newbie to the Brazil forum. I will be getting off the Star Princess cruiseship on December 22 & staying in Rio for 2 additional nights.
I was last in Rio in February 2004 by cruiseship, the Celebrity Infinity, which docked for 3 days & 2 nights for Carnival. There was a pretty wild strip bar just accross the pier that had dozens of working girls and cheap hotel rooms nearby. There was no cover charge, drinks were cheap, & the girls were very friendly! Of course, this was when the exchange rate was about 3 reais to 1 USD. Now everything is almost double the price because of the exchange rate.
Does anyone know the name & have any other information about this bar?
mahalo & aloha!
