Has anyone been to NumberOne, a new place, I think, downtown at Rua da Quitanda 74, not far from 81? The lady at the door said there are five floors with two boates. Thirty reis to get in.
By the way the metro runs all night on Newyears, but you need special prepaid tickets available at a separate ticket window in the Carioca station during the preceding weeks.

Just yesterday there was a commotion just across from Amerioca Tours. Turns out these 2 security guards spotted a guy they had been looking for. The ID'd him as the guy who had been breaking into cars on that street recently. They proceeded to beat the fuck out of him with a wooden stool and billy club, which caused quite the commotion on the street. Almost on que, as soon as the guards got their pound of flesh and walked away, the clouds opened up and it started pouring on this poor sap. It was quite a sight as he laid motionless on his back getting rained on. The gathered crowd just walked away and about 10 minutes later, so did he. After a while we continued on our scheduled trip to L'uomo, which sucked by the way. Many more men than women, and the ones that were working (aside from the always popular Ingrid and Diane) were either sleeping on the couch or just plain fugly. Sometimes Rio gets like this. Shitty weather every day, violence and ugly girls. But I know in a week the situation could be reversed and it's a paradise again. And that's the beauty of Rio for me.- you never know which one you'll get when you walk off the plane. One minute you're on the most beautiful beach in the world and in the arms of a model, next moment you're watching a guy pour rubbing alcohol over his head and light a match.
As for the Olympics, it's not the violence they have to worry about, it's the weather. They've decided to hold the summer Olympics in the friggin' winter. Good luck with that beach vollyball.

Posts: 358Rio gangs shoot down police chopper, 2 cops dead
This may be deemed an act of war between drug gangs and police. In a country like Brazil that had a very recent "junta" past, such violence will give birth to a "shadow" police squad to control the violence. I believe such crime will generate a right-wing government in the next presidency that will support a war on Rio gangs to protect tourism.

"RIO DE JANEIRO – Drug traffickers shot down a police helicopter during a gunbattle between rival gangs Saturday, killing two officers and injuring four in a burst of violence just two weeks after the city was chosen to host the 2016 Olympic Games."

If this keeps up they may revoke Rio's winning bid for the 2016 Olympic Games.

Take it from my experience when I was staying at Flamengo.
That's why I prefer Fortaleza. They have a similar event on Praia Iracema. I park my car 4-5 blocks away and try to leave late from there.
