Rio, just like most third world places, has a combined sewer system that collects both precipitation water and sewers together in the same conduits. During small rainfall events, the existing systems will convey the mixed fluids into a 'treatment' center before it gets dumped in the ocean. That's all good and dandy.

This is the same type system the City of Atlanta has, except the overflow goes into the Chattahoochee River instead of the ocean.

As an observation from the late 90's, at the far end of Leblon beach is a "pumping facility" for the esgoto. As the local legend (knowledge) had it the effluent pipe went about a mile or so into the ocean and ended. The pipe broke somewhere much nearer the beach and the repair included an extension to about three miles or so into the ocean. Now I'm not aware of any sort of treatment plant anywhere in that area. I report, you decide. Also, the favelas of Vidigal and Rochina, the local lore is their effluent just drains right down the hill into. The ocean. Just an observation.

Now, there is a new treatment facility near the airport but only a very small amount of sewage goes over there. Also it is for future cleaning of Baia Guanabara.
Zona Sul has no treatment what so ever...

There is one treatment facility in Parque Público in Flamengo, Estação de tratamento do Rio Carioca.

I doubt it's working, but at least they have one.

Now, you have to ask yourself what happens during large storm events ?

Basically, the existing systems can't handle the larger flows, thus backing up everything into the ocean UNTREATED. That's why you should not swim just after it rains in Rio.

What is a large rainfall event in Rio?

In a nutshell, I would say any rainfall that lasts more than 30 minutes is a large rainfall event, as Rio's streets become flooded.

I dont know if it was in this section or the "Living in Rio" section. But a few guys on here mentioned that Rio has an open sewer system, that the human waste flows directly into their oceans. I was talking to a brasilian who lives here in the states now about this, she swears that this is not true. She said the human waste does not flow into Copa and Ipenema like some of you guys have said. She said "o nome da empresa que fas tratamento nos esgotos em copa é SEDAE"
