The point being that on some of your examples evidence can be presented to support the assertions. You dismiss all the hard work and vision that the government and committee did to land the games. And claimed they were awarded the games simply because they paid more in bribes than other countries were willing to pay. Evidence please.

There was a time when Rio was (relatively) safe

Indeed it was. I was there as well, and my guess was that there were 2 factors driving this:

    1. A series of raids against favelas beforehand
    2. At least in Copacabana, you couldn't walk more than one block without running into a uniformed police officer armed with an assault rifle

It seemed like such a good way to keep order. Not the friendliest way, but certainly an effective one.

If it's a mere R$30 to get in you could have TOFTT, checked it out, and reported your findings here on the board.

Rio's Olympics will be held from August 5 through August 21, 2016. Average temperature in August is 21, average precipitation is 46mm. By comparison, Chicago summer temperature averages 21.1 with average precipitation 93mm.

    2007 Pan American Games

Good point. But I was here for the entire summer Pan American Games a couple of years ago. And it was rainy the whole time. Cold and rainy. I remember actually having to buy a jacket because I never pack one for a Rio trip. The closing ceremonies were particularly brutal -- as miserable weather as I've experienced anytime in the past in Rio. So bad that I just decided not to go and still have my tickets for them (the closing ceremonies that is).

As an aside, I really doubt crime or security will be much of an issue at the Olympics. I remember during the Pan Am Games the streets seeming safer than at any other time.

Stop this silly talk about revoking the Olympics. They have 7 years to put things in place. Should we give them a chance? They will do a major housecleaning and there will be more stories like this. They will shut down the soccer stadium next year for two years and will redevelop all around it during the stadium refurishment. If you are upset that Rio will change drastically - that's one thing. But if you do think the Brazilian gov't can pull off hosting the games that is another.

    SPB,

You crack me up. So - again - please provide your evidence of bribes and wrongdoing..

    Sydney in 2000

The 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney was held from September 15 through October 1, not exactly winter.

These cops start blasting into the favela. Who knows if they got their mark, but it was a hell of a show and drew a decent size crowd on the street.

Just yesterday there was a commotion just across from Amerioca Tours. Turns out these 2 security guards spotted a guy they had been looking for. The ID'd him as the guy who had been breaking into cars on that street recently. They proceeded to beat the fuck out of him with a wooden stool and billy club, which caused quite the commotion on the street. Almost on que, as soon as the guards got their pound of flesh and walked away, the clouds opened up and it started pouring on this poor sap. It was quite a sight as he laid motionless on his back getting rained on. The gathered crowd just walked away and about 10 minutes later, so did he. After a while we continued on our scheduled trip to L'uomo, which sucked by the way. Many more men than women, and the ones that were working (aside from the always popular Ingrid and Diane) were either sleeping on the couch or just plain fugly. Sometimes Rio gets like this. Shitty weather every day, violence and ugly girls. But I know in a week the situation could be reversed and it's a paradise again. And that's the beauty of Rio for me.- you never know which one you'll get when you walk off the plane. One minute you're on the most beautiful beach in the world and in the arms of a model, next moment you're watching a guy pour rubbing alcohol over his head and light a match.

I was there in May. I had an apartment at Copacabana Blvd and Rua Miguel Lemos, I first heard the helicopter then the gun fire. I've had experience with helicopters and gunfire. It was the morning the Rio city water was cut-off during my shower. The combat action was loud and clear.

may be 3.. possibly 4... and we will departure at the beginning of NOV.

i searched for a cheap flight today... and i found cheap one from here to Sao Paolo

other places i mentioned above. cost about 200~300USD more than sao paolo.

Trip is gonna be for 7 days.

budget is around 1500 USD per person excluding airfare.

    Actions wanted by our crew...
    - 3some (aggressive one. like the ones in porn)
    - one sex party night. ( in a rented suite, 3 or 4 of us and 5~8 chicas with lots of alcohol and fun stuff)

    - Cheap TLN would be very strong pulling factor.
    - YOUNG GIRL!!! ( not over 30)

    so.. given the situations...

    1. which place? to meet most of those actions?

    2. flight fares from Sao Paolo to BA or RIO? ( 130 for RIO and 300 to BA are what i found from web search)

    3. would we need a guide since none of us speak any spanish? (if so... how could this be arranged?)

    4. any safe issue? against asian ppl?

    5. do we have to worry about this new influenza thing while travelling south america?

I really need to make this trip worth something...

    Numberone

Has anyone been to NumberOne, a new place, I think, downtown at Rua da Quitanda 74, not far from 81? The lady at the door said there are five floors with two boates. Thirty reis to get in.

By the way the metro runs all night on Newyears, but you need special prepaid tickets available at a separate ticket window in the Carioca station during the preceding weeks.
