I would really like to move to Rio in the next six months, I would be coming on a student visa and switching over to an investor Visa after a couple years. The problem I'm running into is that it seems like you have to have proof of employment and two Brazilian co-signers with the financial backing to cosign for you. I have enough assets to retire on and probably won't work for a year or two except for investment income. From what I'm reading it seems almost impossible to rent an apartment without cosigners and definitely without a job even if I have plenty of assets to pay my rent 100 times over. For those ex-pats living in Rio what did you do? There is the option of Airbnb but there's no way I'm doing that it's way overpriced for more than a few weeks stay. Any help on this is greatly appreciated.

Apply for a retirement visa. That'll get you CPF and RNE. Then find an apartment you like through QAndar. They have some insurance solutions instead of co-signers. VivaReal is also a good site. But. Rentals are in big demand right now, it's not easy.

Consider buying if you have the cash. Prices, especially when priced in USD are at generational lows. You get a Big Bang for your buck. But you need to pay cash, mortgage financing in Brazil is almost impossible for a foreigner.

Most of the upper tier checking account waive ATM fees if you have large amount of money with them. Wells Fargo has the same thing with their Premiere checking account and so does Morgan Stanley. Only bank I know that waive your ATM fees worldwide with no requirement, and doesn't charge you a monthly maintenance fee is CS.

Yep. And the second one is Aspiration, although, like I said, they sneak in a 1% Forex fee without announcing it directly. I recommend both cards for Brazil where there're often ridiculous daily limits.

I did a little digging after reading the SocratesNY post. What he means is Sapphire banking account, not Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card. I have this card, and it doesn't do anything in terms of ATM fee refund. Just like most other credit cards it starts accruing interest right away and charges the cash advance fee too. The Sapphire banking account does indeed have this benefit, but requires a $75,000 deposit, otherwise it's $25 a month. Kind of defeats the purpose.

Schwab is the way to go.

The refund on ATM withdrawal fees is a very nice feature, but does not Chase charge immediate interest on the cash withdrawal (advance)? After all this is not a checking account. You are in effect borrowing the money from Chase. And don't Chase Private Client accounts have a pretty high minimum balance to maintain?.

Chase does refund ATM fees for Sapphire and Chase Private Client accounts. I've gotten ALL my ATM withdrawals in Brazil (SP and Rio) from my Chase accounts (100+ transactions) refunded in full. And a few of the fees were $50+ USD due to the ATM charging an ATM fee based on a % of the withdrawal amount.

I used to have a Sapphire Preferred Credit Card with 3% pts on dining and 2% pts on travel. What I really liked was the 60,000 pt sign up bonus which paid for $600 worth of nights at 5-star Bangkok & Jakarta Hotels at the time. But I canceled my card after I used all my points due to the $95/ year annual fee and the fact that I was just not using the card enough to justify the annual fee.

My everyday card of choice is the Capital One Venture Card with 2% pts on all purchases. That comes with an annual fee too, but the pts is simple to calculate and even simpler to use for reimbursements on any purchase. ANY PURCHASE.

In any case, I think the Schwab Debit card with no annual fees and no minimum checking balance requirements is still numero uno for cash disbursements abroad. The big risk is losing the card somehow while on the road. My back up is to bring along $1000 to $2000 cash reserves plus my regular Wells Fargo Debit Card which will charge ATM fees, ect, ect. But I will only use the WF Debit Card in an emergency because no matter what happens I want to keep the party going when I am on the road.
