I would really like to move to Rio in the next six months, I would be coming on a student visa and switching over to an investor Visa after a couple years. The problem I'm running into is that it seems like you have to have proof of employment and two Brazilian co-signers with the financial backing to cosign for you. I have enough assets to retire on and probably won't work for a year or two except for investment income. From what I'm reading it seems almost impossible to rent an apartment without cosigners and definitely without a job even if I have plenty of assets to pay my rent 100 times over. For those ex-pats living in Rio what did you do? There is the option of Airbnb but there's no way I'm doing that it's way overpriced for more than a few weeks stay. Any help on this is greatly appreciated.

1. No, you don't have to do the programma at 4 x 4 or any other terma. Most dudes come there are for drinks and ass-grabbing.

2. Chase debit cards never failed me in Brazil when I used them years ago, but I've never heard of them refunding ATM fees. Are you sure about that? The only cards I use abroad nowadays is Schwab and Aspiration, but Aspiration more like a spare because they charge 1%.

Speaking of price, it was funny there was some black gringo at 4 x4 talking with the manager at the front desk really pushing hard to get a discount on a bottle. Normally the bottle was 370 brl but that guy just kept pestering the only English speaking front desk guy to give him a discount for some reason. He was finally able to get it down to 300 so I guess everything is negotiable out here. I don't know, just seeing that kind of left a bad taste in my mouth but maybe that's just me.

One other quick question: does anyone use a chase debit card out here? The only ATM's that work for me are Bradesco and Santander, and for some reason my ATM fees don't get refunded by them. I've tried Itau and Banco do Brazil but I can't even get money from those atms at all. Just wondering if anyone has better luck at any other banks out here.
