The best hotel to stay in centro is Hotel Atlantico Tower, and in Barra it is is Transamerica.

Anyone who doesn't need a beach, should consider staying in Centro, IMHO. Good 3. 5-star hotels go for around $20-25 WITH breakfast. I stayed at one of those, called Granada hotel I think, a couple year ago in a very nice one-bedroom suite for like $45. Plus you've got quick and immediate access to millions of cheap Centro fucking venues. Of course, as much as I like downtown Rio I do need the beach, but for a budget-oriented monger who doesn't give a shit, this is a promised land.

Never stayed at the Hotel Atlntico Avenida, but back-in-the-day, when friends and I would do a "Rio Run", and take a few days or a weekend trip from living in Buzios, we would stay at the near by Hotel So Bento.

The Hotel So Bento for those who are familiar with the hotel and the Praca Mau area, know it's more of a "short-time sex" motel than hotel. But it was good value and more than ideal for hobbying in the centro/Praca Mau area, back then.

Couldn't help but chuckle, every time I saw (and heard, due to the thin hotel walls) at the numerous Brazilian men "on business", that also used this hotel, as their primary business lodgings. Or the hot MILF from Buzios, I'd bumped into on occasion at the Subway boate, earning some extra cash on weekends, who also stayed at the So Bento. Naturally we'd laugh hysterically together, when saw one another.

Definitely had some memorable sessions at that hotel, with some gems FLs or gem girls from Bar Florida, Scandinavia bar, Filipino Bar, 2nd-Tier termas, boates, or just hanging out at the open-air markets stalls and restaurants, Praca Mau had to offer.

The area has been gentrified now, and over the past several years, has removed, IMHO, much of the charm and charisma the area once had. Ahhh, yes. . . "Order e Progresso", I guess?

I'm curious to know though, if anyone has any recent reports/updates on the Praca Mau area?

Hopefully things get better by then since the dollar is stronger for exchange rate and looks like since most girls haven't been able to go to the clubs and termas and travel has slowed it's a buyers market!

They also celebrate Independence day in New York and New Jersey on different days but it's all about September 7th if you're near those parts.

CR is a sub-standard mongering destination with only two hotspots: Hotel Cocal Casino in Jaco and Hotel Del Rey in San Jose. Jaco has the hotter girls, lots of Colombians-but they are all pretty expensive-comparable to Panama City-and almost none but the most skanky will do BBBJ which is a deal breaker for me. San Jose girls are a little dirtier but not too many lookers in the bunch. Both locations are convenient because you can rent and bang under one roof and as a result can really let it rip- but there's not really much else to do unless you like gambling. Its fun for a 4 or 5 day trip but not much more.

The Hotel del Rey has closed I understand. The new main joint in San Jose has moved to a new place that also has a casino (don't recall the name but check the Costa Rica threads). And there were and are always more than two options. There was the Sportsmen Lodge (don't know if it's still around). The strip joints with some real hotties available for takeout. And there were a handful of other places around that I tried. But after you had been to San Jose a few times, it wasn't very interesting. And the service level from the girls (mostly Colombian) simply wasn't up to par with what was available standard in Brazil or in Germany. Costa Rica is an easy introduction to mongering for noobs.
