Forget Babilônia!

There is absolutely no risk of getting robbed in Babilônia. The problem is that two favelas share the same morro, Babilônia and Chapéu Mangueira. They are run by two different gangs, CV and TCP. As the favela is pacificated there are lots of heavily armed police, PM, between the two favelas. Unfortunately, the peacekeeping doesn't work. The two gangs fight a lot. Look for a place in Copacabana. Your problem isn't the safety in Rio, your problem is that you worry too much about everything. The muggers will propably smell your fear and you'll end up getting robbed.

I have been reading everything which I can find about crime in Rio and everyone seems to have a different opinion, however this is the general impression which I have gotten:

Non-violent crime. Anything valuable which is not locked up or securely attached to your body will quite possibly vanish.

Violent crime. If there are a lot of people around you are safe, even if it is a poor area such as the infamous Vila Mimosa. If there are not a lot of people around, even of it is in tourist area like Copacabana Beach, however it is after sunset, you will quite possibly to be approached by a gentleman pointing a weapon at you who will demand your valuables and he means business.
