Tourists tend to stick out no matter. Some of the Brazilian attire simply doesn't fit well. My casual clothes from home just look different even when I try to blend in. Most Brazilians seem to have narrower frames. They generally don't have broad shoulders and V shape frames.

There are always, well, let's call them ill-informed tourists who come to Rio to show off their fancy watches, jewelry, phones and designer outfits. Let them have the first dibs at getting mugged.

I'm not being heartless, but I once talked to a guy who was incredulous when I said how much I loved Rio. He hated it. He got his gold chain ripped off his neck in a broad daylight, minutes after exiting the hotel on Atlantica on his first day. I was like, why the fuck did you go out in Rio wearing a gold chain? To which he told me he's going to do what he's got to do.

Well, OK. But criminals are also going to do what they're going to do. They're going to mug. It's up to reasonable people to modify and adjust their behavior when needed.

I was taught to dress down by other Rio veterans when I just started going down there. I mean, maybe the fact I'd never gotten in trouble after all these years is more than just dumb luck. Or maybe not, who knows.

And yes, cheap sandals are also important. That's your only deterrence against the birdshit mafia because you won't see them coming -- they're THAT good! Still got me on more than one occasion.

I just watched the linked video for the first time in my life (damn I didn't know about this show at all). I understood 95% of what the woman said but the guy, damn, he talked way to fast. I didn't get word by word of what he said but I got the jest of it. And the Portuguese subtitle, does not work very well at all. So many dropped or incorrect words.

Oh, it's definitely just a personal taste thing. I just didn't feel the attachment I did to say Bangkok. Communication barriers are a little more pronounced in Rio, even in touristy areas, than say Bangkok as well, where really any venue that wants to do business with foreigners can speak at least the very basics. Rio, while being gorgeous, is also not as safe as I'd like, which prevented me from being willing to really explore on my own. I shouldn't have to feel like I have to "blend" to feel safer. Brazilian girls are often gorgeous, but apparently they did not cure my yellow fever. It also doesn't help that they all seem to be on their own understanding of time and it can be hell trying to land one that matches pictures, even after having them confirm with video over whatsapp (they are some godsdamned photoshop/video alteration wizards). Lastly, I just missed Bangkok's restaurants; Rio's food isn't bad, and the steak is pretty good, but it can't compare to the selection of a larger city that has damn near everything. Yeah, it was cheap, but that's not really unique when you take other popular mongering locales into consideration.

I feel the same way except the other way around and like you, its a personal taste thing. For me I'm super attracted to Latinas. I look at Asian women and my dick goes limp. Like I said, none of this is an outright condemnation of Rio, I just wasn't thrilled enough to come back anytime soon. I didn't dislike this trip. I will be trying Europe next due to some recommendations from others, but I fully expect to return to Bangkok at some point, having had many many successful trips there. Still, it's a matter of personal taste, so don't let my words dissuade you from visiting, unless for some odd reason you're just like me.

And again, pay no mind to people saying learn the language blah blah, if you're only coming for a short trip and perhaps never again. No one really cares if you don't speak the language. It presents obvious barriers, but translators have come a long way, especially now that you can just talk into the things without ever typing a word. Generally if you're polite and understanding, people will reciprocate, translator or no.

Very true, despite only being 5 days of my 3 weeks trips here, I feel exactly the same way as you. Rio will not replace a place like BKK, but it does the job somewhat until this pandemic clears out.

Day 3.

Sunday, slow day. Most of the massage / prive places being closed. Just enjoyed the Copacabana beach and did some strolling around. If you sit at your house and social isolate and play video games all day, you can do that much.

Now I've been here in Brazil 27 times as much as 10 months at a time.

I still want to learn better Portuguese! I will probably take a class. The bubba boy guide mentions some choices, like at PUC-Rio. BR.

I think I will start reading some books, like FIM by Torres, or the Porto language version of the subtle art of not giving a fuck.

I've been out at least one of the mongers here who thinks that learning Porto is not required for their travel to Brazil, and it sucks being out with such lame people, whom I've dropped.

Kind of funny but that's actually true about all the English speaking countries outside Europe as well they also had a colonial Attitude as you put it.

I'm planning a trip to this region with some friends for next year. This will be my first time traveling to Rio. Does any one have any tips for beginners. General information and information based in personal experiences. If there is a large in the thread with answers you can refer me there as well.

For escorts, I would lean heavily on Barra VIPs or Rio VIPs. Pictures were generally more accurate than using say photoacompanhantes. Still, a lot an extra two hours for your appointment as your girl will almost definitely be late. They suck at time management.
