Definitely avoid the second one as it's a hostel for backpackers. As mentioned the first one closed in June 2019.

As ET wrote, New Year in Rio is spectacular. 2-3 (?) millions of people gathering on the beaches. The fireworks are incredible.

Another long time lurker here. Unfortunately didn't manage to visit Brazil before but finally decided to cast off and will spend month there during Christmas and NY. Want to say many thanks to all the regular posters, especially Vagabundo1. I have been reading forum from time to time and can see he is always present with fun and adventures stories).

So far have booked Rio for 8 days, then Sao Paolo for Christmas and NY after that will see which one I prefer.

I have celebrated New Years in cities around the world and few compare to the fireworks display over the Atlantic in Rio. A friend owns a hotel and usually watch it from the rooftop with a bottle of champagne and my favorite girl. You may want to make the trip back for it. Truly impressive.

I second what Exec Talent said. If you're already in Brazil, stay in Rio for the New Year. When you're on the ground it's not going to be hard to find a place that hasn't rented and pay the normal price at a local agency or make a deal on Airbnb. My buddy and I did that during the Carnaval once and found a great 3-bedroom for the normal rate. And we had enough apartments to choose from to be picky.

You can even book a love motel for a day to be safe while you do the leg work. Seriously, it's a hell of an experience and you will regret missing out on it.

Photoacomphantes: For me. Initially it was a miss. I was getting baited and switched, but through experience found some gems. There is one apartment in copa that always has young hotties working there (at least 2 for 2)(r150-200) from the subsequent photos and address I get. Having read the posts of the last 2 days with interest I have to say I'm looking forward to the best of both worlds between Zona Sul / Centro and Transamerica / Barra.

There's Privè's I want to go to like VIP & Shanti on one side and Eros & Euro Spa on Barra. And once I've done the fancy restaurants and touristy stuff, a few days lazing by the beach / pool in relative silence has its appeal.

I'm wondering, for those on the ground;.

Is Dolce Vita open / rumoured to open soon? More to the point, with Barbarella's closed is there much action roaming copacabana at night or is it Mabs / Luxo / Mosaico mainly?
