Another thing that concerns me is whether I should move in SP or RJ. I am not going to Brasil for work just to stay there because I have a steady income. What would you do? Would you move to Brasil right now or not? Which city you think is better SP or RJ? Even if I spent a couple of months to SP and a couple of months to RJ I am pretty sure that it would be a tough call to decide which is the best city to stay and spend my life.
Most importantly, if you spent a couple of months in SP and then a couple months in RJ, you would likely decide which one was best for you. They are very, very different cities.

Secondly, the Sao Paulo thread (and sometimes here) always has extensive discussions with new travelers of where to spend more time. I believe this was discussed in detail just in the last month on the SP thread. The basic comparisons would mostly apply to new residents as well.

Briefly without regurgitating every comparison, Rio is a world class tourist destination with many beaches and surrounded by tropical mountains and greenery. Sao Paulo is a concrete jungle better for mongering. My opinion is that a resident in Rio would find many local mongering options beyond the usual locations. You can guess where I think you should live. I don't think I would live in Sao Paulo unless a job took me there. Flying to the other city is also cheap and quick.

Note: Barra (in Rio) is a great place to live for a full-time resident. You might be thinking more about neighborhoods not just cities. Do you want to be around the tourist havens of Copa and Ipanema? Do you want to be near the subway? Lots to think about.

I've lurked here on and off for a while but just moved to Rio this week so thought ID finally make an account. Love the info spread around here. I'm living with family here so I can't host but Ill eventually hit some termas and clinicas and make sure to report back what I find. I'm a long time fan of Copa 583 with it traditionally being so clean and having showers in each room so will likely head there first. Thanks for having me, and looking forward to contributing.
Welcome to the board and please feel free to share some intel.

Assume you are Brazilian and excellent English BTW.

Oh, I'll contact you for sure, thanks!

But my travel time is very limited, so monthly rates won't work for me. Regardless, I'm sure I'll be able to find a suitable vacation rental in Barra. Time to try some new things, LOL.

Compare this with the balcony view of Copacobana from the Pestana.

The difference is this: In Copa, if you go in the water to swim, especially if the temperature is above about 30 degrees, you can tell you are swimming in the public cesspool of Rio for 500 years of civiilization.

In the beach at my apartment hotel, the water is clean / limpio.

It makes a difference to me.

The cost is 2200 r (reais) or less than 500 US Dollars per month.

PM me for the number of my landlord if you want it.

    Telegraph Road

Knopfler and Zepplin and the Stones may be the anthems for we few, we mongering swinging dicks.

Midori canceled tonight, which is all well and good.

Out here in Barra, it feels at times like Telegraph Road (not lease because the Wi-Fi sucks, but I am working on getting a login for the #NET-Claro network for a mere 100 r a month).

I may go ramble on at the usual haunts, or call in my back up plans. We shall see.

A long time ago came a man on a track.

Walking thirty miles with a sack on his back.

And he put down his load.

Where he thought it was the best.

He made a home in the wilderness.

He built a cabin and a winter store.

And he plowed up the ground by the cold lake shore.

And the other travelers came walking down the track.

And they never went further, no.

    They never went back.

Then came the churches, then came the schools.

Then came the lawyers, and then came the rules.

Then came the trains and the trucks with their loads.

And the dirty old track was the telegraph road.

Then came the mines, then came the ore.

Then there was the hard times, then there was a war.

Telegraph sang a song about the world outside.

Telegraph road got so deep and so wide.

    Like a rolling river.

And my radio says tonight it's going to freeze.

People driving home from the factories.

    There's six lanes of traffic.

    Three lanes moving slow.

I used to like to go to work, but they shut it down.

I've got a right to go to work.

But there's no work here to be found.

Yes, and they say we're going to have to pay what's owed.

We're going to have to reap.

From some seed that's been sowed.

And the birds up on the wires and the telegraph poles.

They can always fly away from this rain and this cold.

You can hear them singing out their telegraph code.

All the way down the telegraph road.

    You know, I'd sooner forget.

    But I remember those nights.

When life was just a bet on a race.

    Between the lights.

You had your head on my shoulder.

You had your hand in my hair.

Now you act a little colder.

Like you don't seem to care.

But believe in me, baby, and I'll take you away.

From out of this darkness and into the day.

From these rivers of headlights, these rivers of rain.

From the anger that lives on the streets with these names.

Cause I've run every red light on memory lane.

I've seen desperation explode into flames.

And I don't want to see it again.

From all of these signs saying, "sorry, but we're closed".

    All the way.

    Down the telegraph road.

I hope you never venture outside the tourist safe havens and have to ask a local for help. You should know by now the importance of learning a few lines of Portuguese it is well appreciated by locals.

Yeah, if a Spanish-speaking person goes to Brazil and then tells his friends about the chicks there, he's going to use "chica" and not "garota". Just like I say "girl" or a Thai guy says "pooying". No need for such petty criticisms. Say "garota" when talking to a Brazilian. Otherwise, who really cares?
