Yep, the "weekend wife" hookup on a quick get-away trip is always a fun time in my books. As Xpartan suggested, buggy rentals are a great way to see and enjoy Buzios and also as mentioned you may want to give Buzios a couple of days.

Arrial do Cabo & Saquarema are also nice, and yes Buzios is too far for a day trip. On that note, Buzios is over-developed, miles of suburban crap and a small but nice town center. Upper middle class families head to Praia de Buzios that is a 10 minute drive away.

Buzios is a very "Americanised" (albeit low key) beach town similar to Tulum in Yucatan, Mexico. Infrastructure barely copes. For example, they lose grid power on a regular basis and sewer trucks come in the early morning to empty many hotels. It's amazing how throughout the world, short-term developers build "pretty" things with views and zero infrastructure (no doubt allowed by corrupt local officials). And by the time it becomes evident with population, it is too late to dig of roads, tunnel or build what should have been done in the first place. Once you get out of the cities Brazil offers national parks for camping (or glamping) and many nice things with no crime issues.

Crime is where there are rich tourists / locals and a mass of local poor people with nothing to lose. This is true of Copacabana and (insert city). Brazil on the whole is currently safer than many USA cities that are hollowed out, failed local economies getting worse by the day. Just wait till AI (should be called automated inequality) creates even more structural unemployment as organizations seek to reduce their human payroll to zero and the "savings" go to a tiny, smug and cynical elite. It's not going to be pretty in the USA where unmet expectations and guns join forces. And people discover the pension funds are empty.

Much closer to rio by a uber and beautiful beach and night life, this is the real zona oest where few gringos go and many of our faves in the best termas grew up.

To me Ilha Grande is better. Don't know if you plan on going in the winter or waiting until the summer. Does your tour start in Rio or the locations mentioned? 14 hours I assume Rio.

I've done both, each on more than one occasion. Do rent a jeep on Buzios if you don't mind a stick. And keep the phone number of your rental shop very close -- these buggers tend to break and lose parts in the mountains of Buzios. But they're totally fun to drive.

On Ilha Grande make sure you visit Lopes Mendes, one of the most amazing beaches in Brazil. You can take a schooner that will bring you half way (it's an easy trek from there), or you can hike from the main village. That's a little harder, but more rewarding if you start early in the morning and take the time to swim and cool off along the way.

I definitely wouldn't do IG or Buzios in one day. Minimum 2 nights, preferably 3 or 4.

I got a script and fill for it in the States right before my Colombia trip. After taking for only two days I started seeing blood in my urine. Now this is a rare side effect but I later learned from the manufacturer's site that can happen. Unfortunately I'm one of the rare ones even though my kidney function test was excellent right before taking the drug. I would advise those planning on getting Prep in Brazil without going to the doc to at least get a creatnine test to make sure your kidneys are ok. It is not advertised much but the drug does lower kidney function so it is not a harmless one. If you're not doing bareback sex I would highly recommend against taking it. Condoms are plenty good enough and even if one breaks by some chance there is a post exposure drug also that you can take if you're that worried about it.

I know that area of Barra (Salvador) like the back of my hand. That area is in general safe. The photo of the white building is right in front of Morro do Cristo.
