Thanks to generous experts here, I have a good feel for what to expect on my upcoming Rio trip. One question:

Barra de Tijuca: Is this outpost good for anything mongering-wise? Is it worth a 2-3 day stopover during a 10-day Rio mongering adventure? Or I better spend my precious time in Copa and Centro?

Ten days is a good, long trip so it's not a terrible idea. I think you can base yourself in Copa or Ipanema and still check out Barra here and there. You have better access to Centro when staying in Copa or Ipanema. My impression from visiting Barra a few times is that everything is spread out more.

Language really shouldn't be too much a concern in your decision if your patient, easy-going and put in a bit of time picking up some basic words and phrases. Some foreign visitors show up and attempt to speak English to everyone they encounter.

This is just my opinion regarding Barra.

There seems to be an undeclared civil war in Brazil now. The economy is going to crap and the poor have it hard. They want to live well too. Dress well, eat at restaurants and bang working girls but can't. Anger is reflected even on the soccer field - 10 red cards given out at a game between Bahia and Vitorio yesterday. One would have thought that with increased poverty there would be more working girls but that is not the case, seems to be much less than my last visit in 2016. Quality the same though.

I have observed that billionaires are like religious fanatics. They cannot have normal sex. To become a billionaire you must have strong hatred for humanity and with that mindset one can never have normal sex, it must be deviant sex where you cause emotional and physical torment to an individual. Favela Cantagalo got 2 entries-one near you. Favela PPG near Nossa and p5 is always problematic but this whole problem will only grow and grow. Rio is going to become more savage because the majority of people are being treated savage. OK guys I am in Rio now a short distance from a subway called General Osario. This is not a cheap area at all. About 7/8 pm tonight I am getting showered and all hell breaks loose outside the apartment. Heavy rifle fire going off, thud thud thud. I counted thirty shots fired. It was damn close and I hit the deck as was scared of a stray round. The whole street was shouting out to each other then the place went completely silent. No people cars or anything. Apparently the nearby favela took a shot at a passing police or military vehicle and the Police etc opened up. They were blasting away into that favela where kids and elderly and a lot of good people live. I am not blaming the Police at all but Jesus, this was like being a war correspondent in Syria. God knows what those bullets hit but they landed somewhere. I will be honest it scared me big time and I am not a wet blanket.

And this is true -Rios image is now mainly a hot bed for violence and the civil war between gangs and police and also general muggings. I hardly know a girl who hasn't been robbed lately. Definetely don't walk with fancy phone or credit cards or lots of money,. Walk with used phone and enough money for the day and that's it. Rio could def use a Help 2. Main obstacle is a right- wing conservative evangelical mayor who doesn't even approve of carnival. He'll fight it tooth and nail to please his fan base but Rio could use the tourist $ for sure and its gonna come to a head soon...Rio is desperate so cant afford to be too precious about where the money is coming from tbh..I mean they just drafted in the military to help control the favelas cause the local

Barra is great if you have a few trips behind you, if you are pretty good with Portuguese and if you have time. I have stayed there for a week and also make sure to do a run on each of my trips the past 2 years.

I agree with Safado69. There are a lot of options to be tapped in Barra. It's just that there's a lot to tap in Copa and Centro too! So, you have to have the time. If I lived down there, I would definitely spend more time investigating Barra, which I in fact did do during one of my Rio trips. So if you find the time, check it out. Then tell us about it!

There are generally 3 options for mongering which are clinicas / privees, independents that have apartments and also boates (like Barbarella's). Many older GDPs (in their 30's) have apartments / condos that they work out of in front of the beach (Av. Lucio Costa).

Another plus this is where a lot of tier 1 termas GDPs go to the beach (Praia do Pepe) and also hang out. The nightlife there is pretty good for non-pros too! There is Olegario Marciel a famous area with bars, Boate All In one of the hottest nightclubs, and several beach clubs like Pesquiero. GDPs frequent these establishments as well.

I wouldn't spend 2/3 minutes there let alone 2/3 days in Barra Tijuca. Want to see it go for the afternoon to the beach with metro. Mongering is not the one there.

You are spot on. The building is a farce and everyone agrees. They destroyed the world's best disco for nothing. The museum was an absurd idea in the first place and to locate it on a beach even adds a comic touch to the absurdity. Who was ever going to visit a museum on Copacabana beach. The question now is will the building ever be finished, and if so, what to do with it? Maybe open a disco-Help 2 as you note. Rio doesn't need to be worried about its image now the world cup and Olympics have been and gone. The kind of tourist who might visit a museum are too frightened to travel to Rio anyway.
