When I was in Rio last month Bradesco would not work. I ended up using Santander to get money. That is why I advised him to use whichever he finds that will work.

As to to Brazil, as I have written many times, it's about balance. But failing that, your card and its magnetic strip should work in most ATM machines in business districts or good suburbs (as opposed to Copa), and failing that grab your passport and get a cash advance and suck up the fees.
