Back in the day when I first started going to Rio Mabs was a major player in the Monger scene along with other restaurant / cafes along the avenue. It wasn't until Help became ground zero that everything moved down to TA and Meia Pataca then Mabs struggled to have quality GDP's.

There was even a group of guys who called themselves the Carioca Brothers and had hats made up for all their members with their name on front and names of Mongering sites which included MABS and Meia Pataca.

I even remember one time in 1986 I flew into Rio on a Pan American World Airways 747 SP (who I worked for at the time) and after I got settled in the first place I hit midday was MABS. I remember sitting there and seeing a motorcycle coming around the corner with a young guy driving and a young girl on the back in a bikini and flip flops on nothing else. I was like wow look how hot she is, the bike stopped she got off and sat 2 tables away from me. One hour later we were in the Lido motel around the corner banging like rabbits, it doesn't happen as good as this anymore.

I've always got the feeling Thailand is not safe and there are many scams. Unfortunately Brazil is not a well organized country for travel and retirement. Just people doing some homework enjoy Brazil.

There were Balcony, Mabs was a gathering place for Germans for a long time. I am sure many people don't know of Mabs' existence when there was Balcony. Even during the world cup 2014 when Balcony was closed for a period of 4 -5 weeks, many of gringos were standing outside Balcony with many vendors around them, instead of taking a seat in Mabs.

I've walked past Mabs many times when I stayed in Copacabana. I've never seen any decent girl. My place is next to Mabs only few minutes' walk.

No idea how you got that feeling. For the past 8 years living in Thailand I have never felt unsafe nor been scammed. There are scams in every country. Keep your wits about you and try to get some street smarts.

Some notes from a whole day with priv visits in Centro. I visited roughly 50 prives. I do this priv marathons so I later can concentrate on the ones I liked most.

General notes:

You make good points but for living I think Thailand has the following advantages over Brazil:

1. There is a significant ex-pat population in Thailand and with the friends you make there it can be like home away from home with lots of available p...y.

2. Thailand is much safer than Brazil (and my second favorite Latin American destination, Colombia). In Thailand I could comfortably venture out at night whereas in Brazil I will constantly have to be looking over my shoulder.

3. For me its easier to make non-pro friendships with girls in Thailand; e.g. To get bed mates to cook for you and clean house, etc.

4. Apartments for rent are plentiful and much cheaper than Brazil (wgs too for that matter).

There is no doubt that the sex in Brazil can't be beat by anywhere else in the world and for me the women are much hotter but for the all round living experience Thailand rules.

The debate over Mabs is interesting. I recall Terrazzo Atlantica the cafe outside Help would start to have a worn, tired crowd late at night as the cafe wound down. What you might find was a more mature woman in her 30's who would've got a lot of looks in a hotel bar back home.

Yep. I have seen some of those exact same chicks at Mabs (and along the roadside on Ave A). In the TA days they were 35 and 37 and as nature would have it, 15 years later as they stand in front of Mabs, they are now 50 and 52. Have at them brother!
