Next door to Monte Carlo is Oceano Copacabana Hotel. It's got a poor rating (6) LOL but great location. Has anyone stayed there? In HKTJ they have rooms upstairs from the club. So in a way this would be similar. Rooms there are very nice. I used to stay a block away in a flea bag because weekend room rates are $100+ there. Oceano has a view of the ocean. There are cheap tickets but I think they sold out very quickly. I have seen cheap price but the ticket was gone by the time I got to the payment page. Sleeper bus is not bad.

When is your trip? This sounds like me. I can speak spanish enough to carry on with most conversations but far from fluent. And despite modest efforts to learn Portugese, I only know a few basic words. My plan is massages during the day and termas at night. And I too fly solo.

It's not like that. Just about all restaurants in Brazil, no matter what kind of restaurant it is, will charge 10% service charge as long as they serve you food or drinks at a table. If you buy your beer at the bar or go to a self-service restaurant there won't be a service charge.

Side-note: Sometimes the bar or restaurant have musicians playing and often they will charge you a couvert fee because of the music. This fee is optional and there is no problem asking them to take away that fee from your bill.

I can swear (but not on my life) that I didn't pay 10% in some hole-in-the-wall places in Rio. I guess, I'll pay attention when I visit next time.

As to couvert, they also charge it for bread, olives and other small munches. Not much, but I usually tell them to take it away. Except when they bring pao de cueijo. Love that shit.

Why would you need luck? Do you have money and Google Translate? That's all you need. Luck has nothing to do with it.

Flights between Rio and SP are tricky. One day it's 30 bucks, next day -- 300. Whatever their computer tells them.

There are three Brazilian carriers: LATAM, Azul and GOL. Some folks prefer one over another, I personally don't care. To me, they all offer nearly identical service.

If you're using Google Flights, try the following combinations.

SDU-CGH -- this is ideal, from the center of one city to the center of another.

SDU-GRU.

GIG-CGH.

GIG-GRU.

There is also a "secret" Rio airport RRJ in Barra the Tijuca that you can use to fly to CGH on Azul. Never tried it myself, though.

The restaurant is large and I was far away with my view blocked and I was charged a fee. The other time is in a bar that it was clearly marked on the table. The waiter also came to tell me about the charge on that table and told me there were other tables that were free.

Once in a restaurant, the waiter started to tell me he needed money to pay for his daughter's surgery. He showed me her pictures and told me things that I didn't quite understand but I got the idea. I gave him an amount that I thought was reasonable. I went there a few times later and he never asked me for money again. That was a strange experience.

BTW. I was in Scandallo sitting by myself. A wealthy Brazilian guy who has lived in the US said why are you sitting by yourself hang out here. So we become friend. We rent a yatch, and party with four really hot girls. I also found out about the girls, they all has college or tech degree, x-tech, nurse and so on. I asked the receptionist, they said that the maid will get in trouble. They can only take it if there was a written note or if I was there to say it is OK. The standardization is why I love the Mercure in Brazil, however a little expensive compare to other hotel. Never once, did any one give me any issue about bring girl, Mercure in Sao Paulo or Rio.
