Never visited Brazil before, but wondering which has a better hobby scene or are they the same: SP or Rio? Also would the summer temps and foreigner safety / street smarts sway the answer?

He moved back to Transamerica when it got cold. His room in communidade only had a mattress. I guess you get what you pay for.

The landlord at my ap in Transamerica is increasing rent 10% from 3200 to 3500 (including 5 g WIFI), but it's not a big deal for me. I am looking around at the other condos in Barra, though.

Yesterday I went to Barra First Class. No bus to centro, but a much better gym. Further out in Barra, near Outback steak house.

I also walked around Novo Leblon which is a top shelf condo, pool open from 6 AM to 22 h, judo and jiu jitsu. But really environment is frankly, whites only. Not a mulatta much less black person in sight in the community gym and restaurant. Very secure. Might as well be in Orange County, California or Lucerne, Switzerland. There appear to be buses at Novo Leblon which run even at 20 h30 at night.

The way to go I think is to find a realtor at Remax or other mobiliara realtor.

I will keep posted about these housing options in Barra.

This is a SCAM. You actually do not need a yellow fever vaccine for anywhere in Colombia.

I even flew into Leticia, right on the Amazon river. I have the yellow fever vax but at no time was asked for proof of it.

Gents, in the midst of a jam and hoping this doesn't happen to any of you. Trying to get from Brazil to Colombia on a fun trip. Need a physical Yellow Fever Vaccine card. I had no clue. Airlines don't mention it at all when booking or in the countless emails they send after. Even the US Trav Gov site doesn't mention this. Anyways, if you book a joint country trip life me, plan accordingly. You need to have your Yellow Fever shot done 10 days before you would need to use that card to enter / exit another country with restrictions.

Thanks. When I flew from Philippines to Africa I needed a yellow fever card. If you're flying from the US to Philippines you don't need yellow fever card but if you're flying from Africa to Philippines you do. Same in your case, it depends on your country of origin. To board a flight from Brazil to Dominican Republic you're required a yellow fever card also.

But you're right, the airlines might not tell you until the minute they're denying you check in. And for US citizens, it's not mentioned on the embassy entry / exit requirement page because they assume US is the country of origin. Probably same with Europe too.

That's not bad, but it sounds almost too cheap to be in one of the Zona Sul favelas (unless it's a very small place). Zona Norte?

Are all comunidades actually favelas? I kind of took it as some type of community action group that is actively trying to improve life in a community.

From what I understand the difference is in the set-up. Favela is usually an isolated neighborhood on top of some hill or something and has houses very close together, if not on top of one another. Comunidade on the other hand is just another neighborhood of the city, has buildings next to one another, has many large apartment buildings. Kind of a hill (favela) vs. The flat surface (comunidade). The two contain mostly people of similar socioeconomic class, I. E. The poor. Other than that from what I understand it's the same thing.

Favela is a generic, general, informal term. It is like in the USA saying hood or ghetto. Comunidade would usually be in reference to a specific neighborhood or community.

In the USA this would be like saying The Cabrini-Green Housing Development. You would not formally call it Cabrini-Green Ghetto or Cabrini-Green Hood or Cabrini-Green Favela. You would call it Comunidade Cabrini-Green or Cabrini-Green Community.

Same same. Comunidade is a nicer and more polite name. Those who live there normally use the word comunidade. Using the word favela is a bit rude if you speak with the locals who live in the comunidade.
