i don't think they used to deactivate the number at all. basically they used to wipe the credits after about 3 months, hence the number appeared dead, however when you added credits everything just came back alive again and worked just fine. i know people that visit rio like 2 x a year and have had the same number for like 5 years.

i had a tim number that wasn't used in 9 months. last week i tried to activate it. didn't work, it was to late.

no worries, a new pre-pago tim chip only cost r$ 10. btw, tim's offer, calling other tim phones paying only 25 centavos / call is a really good deal.

p. s make sure to call tim and have them cancel the manchete tor****s that you will receive automatically. otherwise you'll loose a lot of your credits.

Regarding payment of domestic GOL tickets bought online. I want to correct myself. GOL not only extends the reservation until the arrival day in Brazil, they extend it even more, they extend it until the day you're taking the flight. Excellent service!

Their service center for international calls lies in Montevideo, Uruguay. They speak Spanish, lousy English and no Portuguese. When you call them it's a lottery, you can get one of the good helpful attendants who solves your problem quickly or you can get one the attendants with absolutely no trace of brain activity who will make you loose tour temper and risking you breaking your phone.

Thanks for the knowledge dump Lorenzo. Your info was great! However, I wouldn't write off the level of knowledge some mongers have on the region and are willing to contribute. As I began my mongering in Colombia, I found a great thread on that board that described accurately (as I would discover in my own Master's thesis research later) the factors that feed into the different peoples in different regions of Colombia. Lots of background info was provided on history (both indigenous and Spanish) and mixing of the races as well as percieved / real elitism as well the vast inequality between the rich and the poor that plays into the whole P4P market. I'm sure there are a few experts out there. Hopefully they'll pipe up and educate the rest of us.

The only cities I have mongered in besides Rio are Salvador and Curitiba; I had good experiences in both. Salvador is a majority black city, so the GDPs follow suit. Most are black or morena. The two girls I had were earthy and passionate, did everything I wanted. In Curitiba, on the other hand, most of the girls are of European descent, so you will find many who are fair-skinned and blonde, but also some morenas as well. I also had two girls there; service was adequate but not as enthusiastic as you would find in Rio or points north. Just for future reference, from what I understand, there will be Cruise ships along the shore of Rio De Janeiro during the Olympics that will be used as Hotels. Chances are there will be single brazilian women as well as from other countries staying on board.

Everytime I pass the travel agencies in the mall, I notice that they have flyers up for cruises. 3,5 and 7 day cruises! Anyone ever taken one of these cruises? HOw much did they cost? Was it worth it?

I went on one here in the states, a 4 days cruise from Miami to the bahamas. The cruise was nice but I wouldn't do it again. Hardly any sexy attractive single women! Either they were all old and fat or the young sexy ones were there on their honeymoon. I have a couple of girl sthat I might like to take with me on a 4 day cruise. Plus I have the feeling that brasilians know how to party and I would see some serious eye candy on the ship.

I used to buy tickets with international Mastercards.

But credit cards are a problem here, so I finally got myself a gol card, just for the convenience. That one you probably cannot get.

I could buy cards for people, if they sent me the money via paypal. On the other hand, I am really not in the travel agency business, so I usually do this only for girls, best friends, etc.

I don't want a GOL card, no need for that. BTW an Amex would work just as well, but I don't want that neither.

An option would be to ask one of my friends with a brazilian credit card or a Gf to buy the ticktes, but I've already solved it so GOL will hold the tickets until I arrive in Brazil (without you doubting it or not).

What annoys me is that it supposed to work just fine paying online with a foreign VISA card, but it's not working in reality. It's not really such a big surprise.

With American Express it works fine, but not with foreign Visa or Mastercard.

An option is to get GOL to keep the ticket on Hold until you arrive in Brazil.
