And I don't care. I have been coming to this country for the last 20 yrs. Been from the north to the south and have yet to find something that can compare to the variety and flavor of Asia's best.

There are good options in SP as I am sure there are in Rio. But don't get your hopes up. I enjoy a nice picanha, some veggies, beans and rice just as much as the next guy. But I don't want it everyday for my meals. Once in my trip and I am fine. I require variety and flavor and that is something I am willing to pay more for.

Right, Brazil doesn't have a street food culture like Asian countries do. Nevertheless, I have had some in Sao Paulo. It was on a Sunday if I recall correctly where they shut down the main drag downtown, and you have people walking around and music and events and all of that kind of thing. There were food trucks way at one end of the street, and other places you could grab a bite to eat. I got a tasty meat dish, something to drink. But, that's as close as it comes to street food in Brazil in terms of what I have personally had. Thailand is great for street food! Tasty and cheap!

I love this experience. Being able to find delicious, cheap food for $2-$3 with a $1 beer. I don't think I looked very hard for good Thai street food. But the ones I saw didn't look all that appetizing (e. G. Soup in a bag, fried chicken with flies all over, etc). I did have some good Pad See Ew in Phuket, but it was in a main touristy area for 200 baht ($6).

When I was in Vietnam, they had a hole in the wall restaurant where I got some vermicelli dry pho with bbq pork and egg rolls in it for $2. Street vendor bahn mi in Little Tokyo was had for $1! It was delicious and cheap.
I doubt Brazil (SP or RJ) will be like this. From what I've been reading here and on tripadvisor, restaurants there seem to cater more to the well off (average meal being ~$10 or more). I'm eager to hear people prove me wrong. =)

Checkout the Netflix series "Street Food: Asia", if you get the chance. There are some amazing "hole-in-the-wall restaurants" as you put it, that start on the street and go on to become 1-Star Michelin restaurants. There's even a new season, "Street Food: Latin America", but I haven't seen it yet.

My only Thailand/Bangkok/Pattaya food experiences, came in circa 1997 and 2015. A long time in between and a lot has changed, but the street food for the most part, is still pretty good.

You mentioned Europeans, but Sao Paulo has a strong cultural tie to Italy. Over 1 million migrated to the state of Sao Paulo. My Sao Paulo contacts always want to take me to an Italian hotspot.

Believe me, I'm knocking the food in Rio. It's fine. However, while tourists bring in money to Copacabana and Ipanema, there are times where some of the popular restaurants slack off. They know much of the clientele is not a returning clientele.

It's like comparing the food scenes of New York City and Miami. There's nothing like the food in NYC where you have a lot of affluent people living and working day to day.

All good points. SP and its very large diverse diaspora of cultures, is one of the things that is very attractive about SP (and Brazil in general).

FYI. The restaurants in SP are fully open now. Lots of restaurants are open until 22:00. You still need to wear a mask at entry and a staff will check your temperature at entry. The cost of eating out at a decent restaurant in SP is lower than that in my hometown USA because you don't pay the 18% tips here. But who cares? I am not traveling to SP for the foods.

I am in SP for the Brazilian pussies. The price for a pretty GFE girl in SP is around 500 reals per hour. In my hometown USA, the price would be 1,000 usd per hour, and even at that price, GFE is not guaranteed.

Take into account that SP has the largest Japanese diaspora (approx. 1. 6 mil.), outside of Japan, would also lend itself as to why a more diverse cuisines would exist, especially With a good mix of European, Middle Eastern Arab and African populations, the type of cuisine to be found can be endless, in such a large city.

Yes! I got real "friendly" with every Terma girl I took upstairs before I made my decision to take them upstairs. It is one of the reasons I really liked my Solarium, my favorite terma.

In the clinicas, same as in BKK oily massage parlors, there is virtually no audition time, just a meet and greet. This is why the choice of your clinica is very important. You are relying on the quality and service standards set by the management of the individual clinica and obviously not all clinicas are managed equally. I really like Prime.
