You are right:

1. SP 5 Star hotel prices are getting ridiculous unless you have amassed plenty hotel points and voucher night credits, but 4 star hotel prices are still in the reasonable camp. I managed to book the Renaissance for 6 nights, the Intercontinental for 6 nights, and the Hyatt for 4 nights all on points and vouchers for a part of my upcoming October visit.

2. There is no comparison in nightlife between SP & RJ. SP is world class. RJ is not IMHO. But RJ has urban beaches if that is your thing. I just spent 6 weeks in SP and 4 nights in RJ and I think that ratio is about right. 10 to 1 in favor of SP. On my next trip I am skipping RJ completely and instead I am taking my favorite Scandallo girl to Ihabela Island for 4 nights. If this little side trip goes well, I will take her up north to the dune beaches on my Spring trip.
