I've already planned the things I want to do and the places I'd like to visit. As Mooca is on the list of the bairros I'd like to explore it more in details, I'll pay a visit to the newest of Vani's venues which is located in Mooca. I'll take pictures of some architectural feats in that bairro, such as the edificio Crespi, and the Juventus futebol stadium. I cannot wait to go back to Redway and discover the new venue on rua Otonis (privê Delirious, I guess). I hope I'll be able to locate Babí in that privê.

As usual I'll visit sebos in order to buy rare books (this time I'm looking for Tobias Barreto's original editions of his works: books that were mostly issued between 1880 and 1900.

I'll also try to located works by the other members of the Escola do Recife (Graça Aranha, Silvio Romero and CLóvis Bevilacqua).

On my first visit to Sampa, I had the same impression. I was literally lost within that city because there is nothing that will help you to orient yourself. In Rio there is the Cristo Redentor that can help you to find your way into the city. Moreover, in Rio there are (or were) fabulous beaches and it is maybe more "folklorical" (more colored people which are mostly poor and uneducated).

When I finally tamed the city I was attracted by the facts you listed: Nightlife, cultural sights, educated people and especially very good restaurants (which are lacking in Rio). I would also like to add to your list: a cosmopolitan population.

People sleeping on the streets in Centro is a sad reality, we cannot deny it! It is even worst if you dare to venture into Bom Retiro near or inside Cracolândia. As I lived two years in Rio (in Copabacana on the Barata Ribeiro) , I remember that there were also a lot of people (especially young child) sleeping on the streets. So, from my point of view, homeless people is not really a charcateristic of São Paulo. You'll find it everywhere in Brazil and South America.

I have deserted Rio for several reasons: the beachs are polluted and not in the same condition I found them in the late 70's. If you want nice beaches. Without that yellowish foam on the crests of the waves. You have to go far away from Rio.

But to each its own. I am not dissing Rio (far from this) but I prefer Sampa because it suits my taste and I can find more gems down there: universitarias GDP from European, Japanese, Middle East, Nordic descent compare to what you can mostly find in Rio: dumb funk-do-baile GDP.

OK before I get to the festivities, a couple of things for the traveling monger. To get to this place, after you find it on Google maps so you know the address and that it's right at the end of the checkerboard sidewalk, Gen Jardim #242. The outside wall is red with 242 painted in black with a light brown door. The easiest way from Republica metro stop is to look around inside for the Centro de Campos exit. Up the stairs, across Republica street at the crosswalk, bear left for 1/2 block then right. First street right is Gen Jardim. About 3 blocks down and you are there.

When I walk up to the door, Rose had a man taking the cover charge and handing out a green reciept / ticket. What it was for I'm not sure, but when ever I got a drink or got one for a girl they took it for a while and brought it back. When I left the guy at the door wanted it back. I told him I thought I dropped it and gave him the "shrugged shoulders" I have no clue salute. He accepted that and off I went. Sometimes I think no English can work in the stupid American's favor.

Best place to go first is Redway, but be there not later than 8 PM.

Vanís Way action is also maximumm till 8 PM. None of Vaní's houses are open till 11 PM! They close at 10 PM but most of the girls leave around 8 PM.

Taxi fare airport / Consolação will be around R$ 120, 00. You have a bus alternative for R$ 32, 00 who stops at the main hotels in the Paulista area.
