First trip to Brazil/Sao Paulo and I really enjoyed my time there. TLDR: Thanks to everyone for their reports and helpful PMs.

I didn't think I'd need to rehash some of these details, but literally a few posts down, some BMs were struggling with some practical issues. Here's how I approached them:

RTFF, I read about 100 pages of SP & Rio and the Reports of Distinction. If you have questions, probably have better ones if you sort of get what the different places are about and different BM's styles of the hobby. I wanted to get a broad view of the scene as I was solo for this one.

Flight: coming overnight from the great white north is definitely not my preference, but I wanted to not waste time and flew direct (but likely will fly daytime connections via Colombia layovers in the future).

Airport Wifi / ATMs: Free GRU wifi for Uber (I used eSim as below), but have to watch a 20 second ad. Didn't grab cash, but lots of combo 24 HR machines (probably with high fees). Had backup USD cash on hand for emergencies (make sure crisp and clean otherwise cambios won't deal).

Hotel: Mercure SP Ibirapuera Privilege. Definitely in the flight path and noisy, but didn't bother me after a few days, although would probably stay out of "the path" (as Bearsi posted), in the future. GF friendly as far as I could tell (they mention a guest fee of approx 100 BRL, but I was able to bring a lady over directly to the elevator a few times, but she didn't stay overnight), I didn't like the included breakfast. Thanks to SocratesNY for setting me straight on the GF priority (I had initially booked a nice place but wasn't GF friendly, which is rare in SP). Decent Wifi and clean. Used self-serve laundry.

Cash / ATMs / Credit Cards: walked over to the Bradesco or Santander and they didn't give a conversion option (maybe a CAD thing), but the exchange rate was consistently 2. 5% lower than market rate. I got charged the classic 1 time fee (20 BRL) as I do anywhere that's not my bank brand. Took out 2000/2500 BRL at a time. One surprise was that 2 of my 3 CCs generally did not work anywhere. That's probably the biggest gotcha (I didn't carry all my CCs at once and the banks / CC insisted no issues with card). I always tried to have 2000 BRL cash on hand to mitigate.

Sim: Vivo from the mall (3. 50 BRL+plan), they were really friendly even though I don't speak Porto. But definitely give yourself time as set up takes forever (and for some reason they couldn't figure out long distance) and their system went down, so I had to return the next day. Apparently this plan doesn't expire. Pay as you go.

ESim: I use Airolo (a bit expensive) for first time country visits to avoid dealing with lack of data. Backup is roaming with my telecom provider. Google FI doesn't work in CAD unfortunately (some border town folks have gotten it to work). I generally set esim on iPhone to low data mode and never really have issues.

Uber: From GRU airport to Moema, approx 75 min at noon time to Mercure Moema Privilege (30 min in the middle of the night). Only used Uber throughout the trip, pretty inexpensive, but as many have mentioned, sometimes takes a while for UberX. Use Black if in a rush.

Sao Paulo. I really liked the vibe, I guess I'm a big city kinda guy. Never felt any sort of danger, but didn't walk around late at night on my own. I read carefully through the positive and negative reports in this forum, developed and expectation, which was largely met. It is high-end mongering and not cheap. If you are on a tight budget, you will be frustrated. The cost to get in is 500 after 7 pm, and the barfine is 300. So we are talking 800, about US $160, in just overhead, although some of that can be used for alcohol and food. You start to party with a girl, the overhead may be much more. During daytime there may be 30 gals. Evenings I'd guess 150. The club itself is class. Absolutely beautiful with great decor, sound system, wait staff, and food. The club is huge with many large spaces. I particularly like the large garden space.

I like slender spinners. I am not into oversized bunda and tits. Most of the ladies were too big and not doable. But oversized and fake is the trend worldwide. Seems many guys like it,. You have to go to Asia to find mostly natural thin bodies, and even there they are on the decline. But 10% were very attractive. I had a fantastic time with several of them. Partied heavily with one of them on two occasions. About half of them wanted to do CBJ, and about half of those could be talked out of it. But that is not an issue for me. I hope your trip gets better. Don't worry we've all been here done that. I have to say 100% of the problems that you are having right now could have been prevented if you spent time reading the posts on here that people spend time writing on. Look for the post that are comprehensive and long. Those novels that people wrote in here are very helpful in preventing problems like what you are going through. It sounds like you didn't read this group's post before you arrived because the topics have been beaten to death over and over in here. Be prepared to run into more problems because a lot of things work differently there. Thanks for sharing.

So my first day in Brazil was pretty disappointing. My first day after any long flight usually sucks but I has extra reason to be frustrated.

To start GRU is the only airport I've been to where there is nowhere to buy a sim card. It's really sucks being in a new country without any data to use maps or uber. I can still book an uber using the airports wifi but I figure I should grab some cash just in case my card doesn't cooperate (and it doesn't). Turns out the atms are even worse than the atms in Colombia (so far) and the exchange rates plus fees are horrible. The best ATM I can find offers an exchange rate 20% below market rate and a $24 fee. This sucks but I withdraw just enough cash to get me to my hotel in hopes I can find a better ATM elsewhere.

I get to my hotel and my main priority is to still find a sim card, but I discover that 90% of stores are closed on Sunday. The hotel clerk tells me that there is a mall about a 6 min drive away (30 min walk) so I book another Uber using the hotel wifi and go there. I only see luxury clothes stores and no mobile providers so I find the information desk and they tell me that Vivo is on floor 2 and Claro is on floor 3. After being lost for another 15 minutes I learn that in Brazil the ground floor is level 0 not 1. I go to the Vivo store and the staff is all busy. I go to Claro and I see 3 employees helping 2 customers so I take a seat at the desk and wait. After waiting for 5 min I interrupt one of the employees and ask how much longer. He apathetically says "I don't know" so I leave in a very passive aggressive manner. I go back to Vivo and one of the employees is kind enough to tell me I need to take a number and points towards a screen that has no number on display. I don't get it but I take a number and wait. The waiting is slow so I go upstairs to floor 3 (floor 4 in north american) and I order a wrap. Once again I am issued a number so I sit and wait again, and I people-watch to pass the time. I see lots if beautiful women and I also see a 12 year old girl wearing one of those sexy underboob shirts and I am disturbed. I get my wrap and it is decent. I go back downstairs and Vivo is now ready to help me. As soon as they figure out I'm a foreigner they ask for my passport and obviously I don't have it on me because everybody I talked to told me to only carry what I needed in Brazil. I have to go back to my hotel but I have no cash so I need to find another shitty ATM. There are no atms in the mall so I have to across the street. Banco Santander does not accept my debit card so I go across another street to Bradesco. They are offering an exchange rate 11% under market rate and a $20 fee. This also sucks but it's the best so far. I get more cash and I'm finally headed back to my hotel, but no Uber this time since there's no wifi. Turns out taxis are almost twice as expensive as Uber.

By the time I get back to my hotel, pick up my passport, go back to the mall and get my sim card set up, it's already been 8 hours since my plane landed. I'm jet-lagged and tired as fuck and I'm secretly hoping that half the mall staff die in a fire because the firefighters can't tell what floor they're on. I'm too tired and frustrated to do anything else that day.

If anybody here is going to be a first time visitor to Brazil, please learn from my mistakes.

I don't know what your list is. I know this setup but my experience was YMMV because the ones I had are all from twitter. There is a reason I like them. I have reported this as well.

I am assuming you did not try clinica. It may turn out differently if you have tried because it usually is reliable.
