Phone is Working!

I was really excited this morning when I found out my phone's internet was working. I found out how to check the balance and I have about 4. 5 GB still left. Should be plenty. So the cost is $12 for 1 month, unlimited minutes and text, 5 GB data. It's very cost effective, if you can handle the hurdles of getting it to work initially.

Food

I wanted to go somewhere far now that I could finally take Uber. I've been using this site to look for good eats: https://www.eater.com/maps/best-sao-paulo-restaurants. And went to La Guapa. It's completely overrated, or I might've had too high of expectations. The Uber there cost about $20 REAL. Lunch combo (1 empanada, 2 oz mocaccino, and chocolate ice cream) cost $23 REAL. It was good, but not worth going out of the way for. It was a really light lunch and I wasn't full, but 10 minutes after finishing my meal, I was no longer hungry. I think this is how I should be eating. LOL.

I was craving pizza for dinner, but couldn't find any decent ones open close by. Just started walking around and ended up at Bar Roma. Got their Bife stroganoff. It was ok. None of the meals so far have impressed me much. Toro, O'Burder (by Samariding), Corrientes 348 (Nordico), and Miss Saigon are on the top of my restaurants list. If anyone knows a good pizza place close by, please let me know!

Clinicas

I was in the Jardin area after lunch so decided to check out a few clinicas and apartments. I have to say, this was more of a learning experience than anything else. Up til this point, I've only visited the clinicas near my hotel (Bourbon Convention).

The exchange I recommend before the trip is only for emergency funds. Of course, optimal situation is if you have a schwab account. I understand your concern about emergency funds, but I don't want newbies to Brazil to get the wrong idea. If you are going to Brazil, the airport is not the best place to get a SIM card or exchange currency but these are not really big issues. I usually pay up for a ride at the airport that takes credit card or most likely I or a friend have a driver who will pick me up for XX dollars.

Once you are settled in at the hotel you don't really need Brazilian currency or a SIM card immediately. Plenty of restaurants and cafes take credit card. In a pinch, you can rely on your hotel to give you a better exchange rate than the airport or your local bank.

I'm fairly sure you won't get a great rate for Brazilian Reais at a North American or European bank. It might be better than the airport, but that is about it.

The predominant steak houses in Brasil are Churrasqueiras, Brazilian love them because of good quality, fast service and good value, but you do not get those typical cuts in those places. However, next time in São Paulo, try going to Rubaiyat in Faria Lima, Pobre Juan or Corrientes 348 (both located in Miguel Calfat, opposite extreme) you will find the thick cut type steaks on those restaurants. There are other steak houses that offer those cuts as well in Jardins and Itaim Bibi.

I saw many sharky types just looking for foreigners who can't speak Portuguese, so just be careful. If you don't like anyone just go to connection and check it out (I don't know how it is on Monday). In connection you could sit in the restaurant and have convo using app at without being pressured to order food and drinks like in Scandallo.

I think all US providers have some kind of short term international plan, you can check your provider's plan so you can use it in the future while you are trying to get local sim to work.

I did visit the Rio thermas maybe two years ago when on a work trip. Honestly I was not impressed. It may be my particular preferences which is for white spinners, less fake T & As, and the thermas were lacking. I found the girls in SP more my taste.
