FYI. The restaurants in SP are fully open now. Lots of restaurants are open until 22:00. You still need to wear a mask at entry and a staff will check your temperature at entry. The cost of eating out at a decent restaurant in SP is lower than that in my hometown USA because you don't pay the 18% tips here. But who cares? I am not traveling to SP for the foods.

You can a lot about food from youtube. They are probably not as cheap or as easy to find as Thailand but it is pretty cheap. I have come to the conclusion that Rio's food is great but SP is better. If you just google the ranking. SP is always on top with Mexico City, Lima, rarely you will see Rio mentioned. They both are good enough for me either way

Now my food palate, maybe (unapologetically) pedestrian and not as sophisticated as others, and at times will run more towards good old fashion street food cuisine. Thailand / Bangkok is a great example this. IMHO, it has (or at least it use to have) some of the best street food in the world (well amongst the limited places I've traveled, anyways).

I admit having a great meal "by the beach", is pretty good, but it was a sheer delight when your meal was were served "right-on-the-beach".

One of my all-time favourite meals while in Brazil, was peixe frita e bata com salada, when served right-on-the-beach, with ice cold beers and a side order of some of the best Brasileira bundas, buceta and bronze bodies, strolling by half-naked, in the hot Brasilian sun. Not only was it a tasty meal, but for me, a sublime dining experience, that just keep on giving.

Sadly, most of these street and beach vendors operations shutdown, due to brick-and-mortar restaurants complaining that these vendors weren't paying their fair share of taxes, littering the beaches and were defying Rio Prefeitura ordinances.

For a lot of families, this was Sunday dinner on the beach, where families enjoyed a nice large seafood platter, while the kids splashed about. There is something to be said for those bygone days of eating a nice meal on right-on-the-beach.

Not quite Sao Paulo refined dining/cuisine, but simply "maravilhoso" , none the less.

I love this experience. Being able to find delicious, cheap food for $2-$3 with a $1 beer. I don't think I looked very hard for good Thai street food. But the ones I saw didn't look all that appetizing (e. G. Soup in a bag, fried chicken with flies all over, etc). I did have some good Pad See Ew in Phuket, but it was in a main touristy area for 200 baht ($6).

When I was in Vietnam, they had a hole in the wall restaurant where I got some vermicelli dry pho with bbq pork and egg rolls in it for $2. Street vendor bahn mi in Little Tokyo was had for $1! It was delicious and cheap.

After spending one long night in Rio, I came to SP for two days to take a break. I prefer SP for the food over Rio. I enjoy good food and look forward to my meals. Rio is boring as fuck for food.

Take into account that SP has the largest Japanese diaspora (approx. 1. 6 mil.), outside of Japan, would also lend itself as to why a more diverse cuisines would exist, especially With a good mix of European, Middle Eastern Arab and African populations, the type of cuisine to be found can be endless, in such a large city.

But I would argue the same can be found in Rio, just not on the same scale as SP.

Since this has come up in conversation, I would concur. Sao Paulo has better food than Rio. Sao Paulo is a more sophisticated city with many more sophisticated palates. You could probably say the SP population is also more diverse as well. The good food also seems to cost more.

I enjoy my meals in Rio very much because I generally focus on what Brazilian restaurants do best. As someone mentioned on the Rio thread, a simple steak or fish dish is so much more enjoyable sitting outside along the ocean.
