Yep. I got tear gassed last night. They were taking people's trash and lining it up at intersections and lighting it on fire so cars could not cross. My taxi had to go around to Conceicao but the police on horseback had that way blocked off. I finally told him that I would just walk the rest of the way. So I got my luggage and started hoofing it. A bunch of loud pops and booms were going off everywhere. You would see the smoke and see people running. Then when the wind started carrying it I couldn't breathe and started crying and my face was burning. I have pictures and video. I finally got to my hotel which is one street over from Rua Augusta. They are out there now as well. I can hear them chanting and the ghetto bird is in the air again.

Sounds like you got closer than we did, which was close enough. My shirt smelled a little bit this morning but at least my eyes were not burned. The burning garbage was a really nice touch and a "great" way to get people just going home to see things your way. Will anything change? Probably not. Will the fares go back down? I doubt it, but as one of the guys I met today said. Maybe it's just some of the people's way of trying to be heard. They are tired of eating the governments shit sandwiches just for the bread. Oh well, I just hope that I don't get gassed again.
