I just got back from about 8 days and little has changed,
All in all, it was good trip, but we did scope out a couple of hotels, if Morazan becomes an issue.

Pretty much spot on with your report. The new owners of the Morazon are from Venezuela, so the jury is out on this one. If someone is looking for quietness in the gulch, then the best choice is the Mona Lisa. Others have their appeal but the M. L. Is definitely the one with the less noise.

I knew their letting in the locals would stir up trouble. Stayed at the Morazan once, never again. Total dump.

Thursday, Friday, and Saturday still seem to be the best nights at the DR, with quite a few new choices. I didn't see very many Columbianas this time.

I think that La Princesa Marina still has the best fresh sea bass or snapper, (depending on the season), but the price of fuel makes the taxi ride a hit / miss. My bud and I made two trips out there. The first taxi took some short cuts and beat all of the traffic on the way out, so we asked him to come back. HE took the long way back and got stuck in traffic, so we decided to walk the last six blocks. On hte next trip, the other taxi did the exact same thing, so we decided to walk the last four blocks back to hotel. HE was more accommodating and dropped his price to 3200 c, which is what we paid him going.

On Wednesday, the new owners of the Morazan stopped the lunch buffet until further notice, because it wasn't selling. Also, w/free breakfast, they have changed to some acidic orange juice, with a bitter after taste. It happens when juice is made from certain whole oranges. The appetizer menu is good and I enjoyed the quesadillas. They haven't changed anything in the rooms and some still have the 4:3 televisions. We are accustomed to the owners saying Hello, when they see you, but not these guys. I am surprised that they are in the people business. I imagine that they will test raising room rates to try and pay for any changes. The place never seems fully rented, it just seems some of the rooms can't be rented because of the bad bathroom odors.

Okay, I will amend my advice: Do not negotiate in dollars unless you are too fucking stupid to do eighth grade math.

But really, my advice is sound and applies world-wide. You will get better pricing and treatment if you negotiate in the local currency, preferably using the local language. And learning a currency conversion is rumored to be easier than learning an entire language.

Once a chica gets the concept of dollars in her mind, you are wealthy in her mind from that point forward, regardless of your actual economic situation. Just got back from my first foray to San Jose and I must say. WOW.

Stayed at La Amistad on $99/ day room and all-inclusive with meals and drinks included. Not bad. Hotel was clean. Chow was pretty darn good. And the staff is friendly and helpful. Bit further from the downtown actions at Hotel Del Rey but the taxis are ridiculously cheap. Rooms are spartan but serviceable. I wish they'd replace the bath towels which are a bit dated but hey. We can't have it all. Met alot of other good mongers there, and we traded advice and stories.

First day stopped in at New Fantasy MP for some afternoon delight. Grabbed a few Costa Rican beers, mingled with the gringos at the bar and laid eyes on a cute black-haired chic. Amy?. Did a half hour session for $35.I hear the chico rates are almost half that. So a lot of chicos are crowding that bar. But the session with the girl was solid and I moved on.

Most the rental car places did a $600-$900 hold on your card FYI. So anybody who is short on funds might have a problem. Driving was fun! Watch out for motorcycles! Parking didn't seem to be a problem, most places in the downtown San Jose area are about 1,000 colones / hour. Some said 3,000/ day or 4,000/ night. For quick math I just did 1,000 colones = $2 USD. My favorite (minimal speaking) was on avenida 7 between calle 7 & 9. You walk up, he gives you a ticket with current time, when you come back, give him the ticket then pay. They are probably all like that but, it was close to new fantasy for me. After that I stuck with what I knew. The whole downtown area is pretty easy to walk...

I like the Sleep Inn but the chica fee is too much. Does anyone know about the chica fee and room quality at the Mona Lisa? The old set up at the Presidente was perfect but you can't go home again.

For Sportsmans, you can basically say the higher the price, the nicer the rooms, and the loud ones near the bar are the lowest priced. There is no chica fee at Mona Lisa and while I would not call it "high end," it is a better deal from a pure hotel standpoint than Sportsman's. Everybody should spend about five days at the Sportsman one time, but it's not exactly a top value. At Mona Lisa, you are very near VIPs and Scores and Zona II whereas at Sportsman's you are a bit farther afield.

If you are still in SJ, go to Relax and 360 MP. Former in city near Delray, latter in sorta suburbs, Paseo Colon. Fantastic quality. No upsell. Lot of variety to choose from.

Can't compare CR to Thailand, nothing compares to Thailand. But eye candy quality is higher in CR.

Don't forget to spend all your evening in Delray.

Couldn't agree with you more, LL. Earlier in the year, when the colone fell 10% almost overnight, I was saying pay the girls in colones. They could not do the simple 8th grade math as Dickhead said. However, someone schooled them real quickly and now they are math professors. Better stick with Dollars unless you go to one of those 10,000 colones M. P. 's on Calle 6.

It's always adviseable to go to one of the conversion websites and print out the conversion slip for the dollar / colon currency, takes the math out if the equation. I'll usually give them $60 - $80 American in twenties, provided the service is as expected. Negotiate in advance what you're getting. Offer a propina (tip), if they live up to their end of the bargain. Don't pay their cab fare; they're just going downstairs for another trick, 9 times out of 10.

True, only 6 floors!! The rooms on the 6th floor have terraces. Stoped staying in these rooms after a few trips because of street noise. Anyone with an outside room can attest the Ticos have no problems beeping horns and blasting radios all night long. [ / QUOTE].

There isn't a quiet room in all of the HDR. Even the noise on the terraces can get to be a pain when you want to grab some quality sleep. Interior rooms get all the bar / casino noise. The thing to do is get a young chica and have her press her thighs against my ears!
