I chose Delta Airlines, because they are using ATL as their Latin American hub, and I live near a local airport that connects there. With enough advanced notice, the flights are fairly cheap, and eventually I will have enough miles to get a free flight.

If you are a GI, and you have an hour to kill between flights in ATL, go to terminal T and visit the USO. Very nice place to relax and the volunteers make nice sandwiches, hot dogs, and other alternatives to expensive airport fast food. Only the Philly USO is better, as it has computer terminals, a mini theater, sleeping rooms with bunk beds, a kids center, etc. In Philly, you don't even have to leave the TSA security cordon, unlike ATL.

I landed in SJO, and even though I didn't check in any bags, it still took me 45 minutes to get outside, due to the very long line at immigration. Two planes must have landed at the same time.

When I got outside, a guy with a sign with my name on it was waiting. He wasn't the driver, but a guy the driver tipped to wait. It took me so long that Gato the driver had to get this other guy to wait for me. Once Gato, the Sportsmens Lodge driver, rolled up, it was 15 minutes to the hotel. Enroute, Gato was a font of useful tips and information. Very friendly, very talkative.
He promised to hook me up with a nice chica for a real massage with her imported machine, to be followed up with 'full complento' wink, wink, for just $80.

We rolled up to the hotel. As I walked into the lobby, I could almost hear 13 sets of eyeballs clicking as they rolled in my direction. The hotel has a narrow entrance, opening up into a covered courtyard lobby, followed by the bar. Not bad, especially since my flight from ATL was just 10 minutes short of 4 hours, and alas, did not serve a meal. Then I asked directions to the nearest bank and changed some dollars. The hotel offered 530 to one, the bank gave me 551.

Eventually, I went down to the Del Rey. I was looking for "Anna Patricia Lee" a provider I met in 2006. Anna Patricia Lee showed up, late of course, but when I took her up to the room, the staff stopped us, got her passport or cedula info, and tacked on a $25 chica fee.

Anywhere you combine tourists who are perceived as rich with third world poverty it is a recipe for crime.

What is the solution? Stay aware, try to minimize risk, Walk confidently and don't stop for anyone you don't know, never leave your drink unattended, and don't trust strangers, and don't flash money, jewelry or fancy clothing. Carry only the money you need, and carry a copy of your passport. Leave the wallet and passport at your hotel (Note: IN st. Martin last week, there were prymarks on my safe).

All you can do is minimize your profie.

When is your flight landing? Also try this, as you are in line at customs I look for guys who could be staying in town for the same reasons as I am. And start the chat going. Where are you stay? Most even if they are going fishing are staying in the gulch. Ask if you can share a cab with them. I have been 100% everytime I tried it and most times became friends with the group. Alot will either be first time trips so you become the expert or if they have been there before. They are crt members. On the crt site some guy wrote about catching a 6.00 taxi (or bus) that takes you right to the gulch. I have to thought about the bus but once you get thur customs you want nothing to stand in your way of pussy. Look you are already saving a avg of 30. 00 a night staying at the morazan vs sportsmen so spend the cash on the taxi.

So I'm staying at the morozan, I'm 21 and I'm going by my self so it would be great to meet up with some experienced mongers and have a good time and have a few drinks. Sounds great. We just added 2 more guys to our group (great guys) not all of them are staying at the sportmens but nomal night starts with dinner and few beers at the sportmens, then at the delrey at least by 8:30 then hang out have some beers up on the top area. I myself enjoy leaving the delrey and hit vips1 and vips2 (and a few other places at night) we are better in numbers when leaving the delrey and alot more fun. We are planning some daytime stuff (other than hitting 6th street and the mp's) like the avt trip and maybe a rafting trip. I know all my plans sound good then once we get there, they all go to hell. But one of the guys with me likes to do more than just chase pussy. So maybe this trip we will get that raft trip and avt trip done! The count down is on fellas. Only 4 days till kick off for me. The Del Rey certainly has some nice chicas in it, but often quite over priced. The fee per chica you take to your room is still ridiculous. If you really want to find the hidden gems of Costa Rica, stay somewhere else.

Just in the difference in price you'll pay at another reasonable place, you can screw 1 or 2 girls a day. No chica room fees, and you get to see some different stuff out there.

It's easy to get ripped off when you're traveling. In my 50 or so trips to SJO, I can't recall being ripped off. It's been a total of 20 years, though.

I have had a number of attempted rip offs in other places, though. As has been stated here, don't carry all your valuables with you in one place. Obviously the vulnerable place is at the airport. So, I don't dick around with trying to find a taxi and such, where I'm milling around in crowds, and providing ample opportunity to pick my pocket.

I also don't carry a wallet in my pants. If I have one at all, it's in my shirt pocket, in my direct view. I also have shirts that have an inside pocket, so I can keep larger bills there, and lessen my exposure. If I need a credit card, I'll take one with me. Each trip I take, I figure I'll be ripped off, and walk out the door prepared for it.

Here is something of interest. Instead of carrying your passport or photocopy while walking around, the Government has a new ID Passport Card.

As far as I know, this card is not valid for travel to Costa Rica. Only good for Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. It's also only good for land and sea travel, not flying.
