ALWAYS pay with colones, period. It will save you money. The bank on the departure level at the airport offers a fair rate of exchange, but it won't be open if you arrive after 10 pm. DO NOT exchange anywhere on the arrivals level, a floor beneath the departure level. You will get ripped off. When in the gulch, I normally exchange dollars into colones at the Casino Colonial next to the Del Rey, often while eating at their excellent restaurant.

Independents at the Del Rey and Sportsmens Lodge who request, for example, $80.00 for their services will almost always accept 40,000 colones, or 50,000 colones if they demand "cien. " Note the current exchange rate, and you will see why paying in colones is best.

Local ST places price is quoted in colones. You can change dollars anywhere for the official exchange rate. You save little money by paying in colones.

In Del Ray girls quote you in dollars. Maybe they have a black market rate they get.

Just do it. You'll have a great time. Spend a night or two in San Jose. A night or two in Jaco (weekend) and do some sight seeing. It's a beautiful country and despite the people posting about the "good old days" its still very good there for mongering.

Find one of the hustler guide guys during the day and he'll show you where the day spots are for $20. Girls are 20-30 with a room. Quality ranges drastically and they won't speak English.

At night go to the del Rey. It's a great experience there. Minimally you'll have a really fun night out, drink and enjoy some ladies company.

Jaco should be done on the weekends as most of the best girls go there for the weekend from San Jose. I really enjoyed the selection in Jaco. Take the bus out there it's really comfortable, cheap and direct.

I used to go to San Jose at least 3 times a year during it's heydays. Lots of exceptionally beautiful Columbians, Nicaraguans, Panamanian including local ticas used to hang around Blue Marlin bar. Cost was $80 all night. Had great times. If you wanted daytime release plenty of venues $20 for half hour with nice looking ladies. Good girlfriendly hotels in the neighborhood. When I went last year scene has gone downhill. Hardly anybody worth looking at, let alone negotiate. Girls are available with an attitude and higher prices.

Action has moved to Jaco. It is a beach town roughly two hour drive. Plenty of good looking girls and cost wise $100 to $200. Some stay overnight.

Comparing to DR these are apples and oranges. CR girls tend to be fairer with pretty faces. Some dark girls in minority. Columbians mostly with big boobs some with plastic surgery. Even ticas have great bodies. Price wise generally same both places depending on your negotiation although DR for ST is cheaper.

But a visit to CR is a must if not mongering just for tourist sites. If you do get a girl take her with you sightseeing.
