i'm beginning to think i prefer the new fantasy type experience to the trolling at the blue marlin or key largo experience. it's cheaper, i don't have breath other people's second hand smoke, we both know it's all about the customer so i can enjoy the massage & not feel compelled to try to satisfy her. call me old fashioned, but that's a hard habit to break. and i'm certainly much better off without the booze. now don't get me wrong, there's a lot to be said for the window shopping and flirting (i'm flirting with the gals, they're flirting with my wallet) & i'll likely continue that exercise as well.

i know what you mean. i like to flirt and watch at the bm and kl, and sometimes go with a girl there if things work out right (if i can get a great price and the girl has a great attitude; hard to find, but i've done it many times). but it's so nice to get the massage at zona blue or new fantasy, know you will get your full hour, know the girl's job is to satisfy you, pretty much know she's not going to steal from you, and just generally know you are going to have a great time for a great price. zb is my favorite place for this reason.

somewhere in your report you mentioned the girl turning off the light for the bj. that is a pet peeve of mine: often the girls want to turn out the lights for sex and i have to insist on leaving it on. usually we compromise with the bathroom light on and the door open, something like that. no way i'm paying for sex with a beautiful girl and not be able to look at her! hell, if i'm not going to see her, i may as well pay half the price for an ugly chick!

Thanks for the info. Sounds like at least some of the rooms downright SUCK.
And people complain about the Morazan?! For $40, it sounds much better than the much higher priced SL (at least some of the rooms, as explained).

I have not stayed at the SL but here is my opinion based on one night of hanging out there. Maybe that does not entitle me to an opinion, but here it is, anyway.

The lobby is super fancy, very nice, as is the bar. The waitress was really good, and I can see how it might be a cool place to hang out if you're a "sportsman", wanting to hang with fellow sportsmen at the bar, watching football etc..

However, I did not care for it the night I was there. I felt it was entirely too "clique-y", that if you weren't part of the group of guys staying there, you were not easily accepted into the clique. Also, I'm not sure I would really have WANTED to have been included in the clique of guys the night I was there.

Also, the selection of women downright sucked. Basically there was only one who was available and she was about a 6. The other 2-3 girls were okay, nothing special, and were being taken up by the clique of guys sitting together at the tables.

I will admit that the guys who were part of the clique seemed to be having a great time together, and with the girls!

However, that is not my scene, I prefer to hang with just one or 2 other guys and then make stops at the Del Rey, Idem, Key Largo, and maybe a few other places...

Just my 2 cents. I doubt I will ever stay at the SL, especially after reading the recent report below, hearing time and time again that it's very noisy there, and then my own - limited - experience there.

Granted, I'm not much into sports or fishing, either. What I'm there for is mongering.

Question is, how much time to allow for trip back to airport? When do I have to leave the hotel? Any other advice?

When in San Jose, I generally stay at the Hotel Amon Plaza. It is a girl friendly 4 star hotel that is only about 5 blocks from the Hotel Del Rey. Because it is in the Barrio Amon, it is in quiet neighborhood. Here are some pictures of the place.

In addition, they have a nice restaurant that offers a typical tico buffet breakfast every morning, and the staff is bilingual.

I have been thinking about a short trip to SJ. I have a simlar age problem to yours and I do like my comfort. I understand that most of the 4 or 5 star hotels are not near the "gultch" and are not GF. SO I guess I owuld have to put up with Sportsmans for a few days.

I would pick Sportsmens Lodge 1st **IF** I was guaranted a new edition suite. Maybe it's only 2* in the real world but it's adequate, convenient & the bar is really a lot of fun at night. I paid 299, 691. 62 Colones for six nights with one dinner charged to the room (2, 845. 54) and 199. 33 in local calls (mostly by that SOB Jimmy who came over to my room to make his calls). That was with all the taxes and the CRT discount, so overall a pretty good value considering the location. And really. The cost of the local calls is dirt cheap so who cares?

If you want the best go with the Marriott, no question. I paid $130 in October but it looks like it's about $180 in the high season. I was upgraded to a full suite & got essentially free breakfast, snacks & dinner plus all the sodas I wanted. It is definitely GF, just check her in. The girls will get all the courtesies your wife would get. They have a nice pool and very good grounds. Downside is it's a $15 or so cab ride into town & back (each way). If you're going to hook up with a single gal it's probably the best way to go. If you want to cruise the Gulch it's probably the worst way to go. There is a free shuttle to the airport when you're ready to leave, though.

Most likely I'll shoot for the Lodge again next time & use the Marriott as a fall-back.comparing the two is absoultely apples & oranges but the merits of each is as strong as are the defecits.

I thoroughly enjoyed your report of yesterday. I personally really like the Sportsmens, however, I too have spent nights in Felicidad. It is a nice big room but the bathroom is smaller than on a rowboat! The other thing, the security guards and gardeners all hang-out right outside your window, during the day and at night. So, if your lady friend is too much of a screamer then you are giving a free show to the workers. Maybe some girls enjoy this.

....the room at Sportsmens certainly won't do it!

I think that's the biggest issue with the Sportsmens Lodge. It was my first time there. I made my reservations in October. My first room (5 out of 6 nights) had a crappy P. O. S. Couch with the foam showing and the trim laying on the floor. Total lighting was probably less than 10 footcandles (no joke). Less than a dimly lit parking lot at night. I had to leave the bathroom light (and fan) on 100% of the time just to see, even with the blinds open. There was essentially zero soundproofing. And the morning light was enough to wake you but not read by.

My second room Le Rey (? ) was just the opposite. Newer furniture, plenty of lighting, nice bathroom with vanity & large shower with tub. It had a second, useless room that had the minibar & a microwave. It also had a small private courtyard with chairs & tables. It was just past the glass doors into the new section. The glass doors that seperated the old & new sections provided pretty good sound attenuation. Plus there was an ice machine nearby (that I never knew about until I moved). The only downside to the room was the lock on the door. It's the cheap-ass push-button type & if you don't remember to push the button your door will be unlocked. Like Jimmy's when he & Brown Sugar retired. I waited ten minutes, hollered & opened ther door to scare the crap out of them. I had a good time with it but I can't speak for his opinion.

The bar area & especially the large screen TV on game nights was the big draw. Good people having a good time. The bartenders, especially Austa (sp) at night were simply great. The drink prices were fair to a little high (the Jaeger shots in Red Bull were $8 each, Imperial beer was about $2).

Overall the guys were great to meet & BS with. Alberto was a ball with his great laugh & local insight. To me the majority of the girls were too young but I'm sure most of the guys would take exception to my opinion on that.

I had my reservations for nearly 3 months & still had to move. I heard several guys bitching about having to move 2 & 3 times. Other guys were bitching about having to share a bathroom (! ) in the old section. I would suspect every one of the old section rooms has a noise problem. Saw a couple check out because they weren't happy with their rooms.

Bottom line: I'the go back in a heartbeat ***IF*** I was guaranteed a new wing suite or at least a new wing room 100% of the time.

As to the girls, I struck gold. With my limited experience my guess is the DR & Key Largo girls are mechanical gold diggers for the most part. On the other hand, I had good luck at the massage parlors & was happy with BBBJ 2 out of 3 times. Observation: the gals at the massage parlors. Like Jennifer. Are down-on-their luck gals trying to pay their bills. Their bills are high to them but very, very low by our standards. Those gals understand sex, know what men want and would probably all dream of a ticket to the promised land.

If I were to go back & not have a winner like Jennifer to hook up with, I'the focus on the cheaper massage parlors in the early afternoon & find one or more gals I liked & ask them to dinner. I fell into it but the formula proved almost perfect. I would probably only go to the DR & Key Largo to troll & look at the eye candy. Just for sport. I might go to the Tico bars again, because it wasn't pretentious, it was just fun. But it could get pricey.

Overall my impression this week of SJ went from strongly negative to solidly positive. My impresion of the Sportsmens Lodge went from strongly negative to strongly positive given the caveats. With the only option being the old wing I'the stay elsewhere. In fact, on the next to last day I stopped and asked Johanna if I was supposed to move. She said yes but the other room wasn't cleaned so I had to pack up & store my stuff behind their counter. I said wtf? & she said checkout time was noon & I had to be out of the room by then. Needless to say we clashed a bit. I simply said no problem, if there's not a room for me to move into I'll find another hotel. 20 minutes later & I was in the other suite. Otherwise I'the have been at the Presidente or DR.

In light of finding Jennifer I've got to find another reason to tell the wife why it's time for me to get away for a week.

I suspect this will be non-enlightening for those who have spent time in San Jose but may be useful for those planing a visit.


Night 1

Arrived San Jose 9:30 PM from Houston. Through immigration & customs & to the Sportsmens Lodge in less than an hour. $19 US cab ride from the airport.

Got checked in and had a little culture shock. I spend about 160 days a year in hotels & am used to a much higher standard. My room was the "Felicidad" - the very first room as you enter the hotel, facing the street and adjoining the entry hall. The room had a small compliment of 25 watt lightbulbs, a bathroom the size of my kitchen table & no place to set toiletries except on the back of the commode where the fecal aerosol rises every time you flush. The room was not quiet. The bed was adequate at best. Clearly the windows would let in the first sign of light. If you select this hotel be sure to bring a sleep mask & ear plugs. [insert silver spoon jokes here]

Hit the bar and had a few beers. Met some nice guys and had several more beers (mistake at my age). Went to the Key Largo after the Lodge's bar closed about midnight & was immediately accosted by a bright, smiling 28 y/o with a huge [artificial] rack names Keylin. We had a pretty good time dancing to the live band & drinking more beers (another mistake). Headed back to the room & had fun in every orifice. Unfortunately the beers, time (now past 3AM) and my age took their toll & I tired before finishing. Old age ain't for sissys. I suspect the biggest problem was the busted fantasy. I'm used to girls getting wet. Very wet. This little gal never did, telling my over active brain it was all business for her. Kinda took the spark away.

So to bed a little after 3:30 & the light came in at 6:30 with the noise following at 7:30. I suspect Night #2 will close a little sooner.

BTW - there was certainly no shortage of gals at the Key Largo. A bit loud for my tastes & with the not-quite-fluent-in-English issue of most of the gals it made communications a bit difficult. One thing I noticed was that the gal I had was quite pretty. Some of those guys obviously have different tastes in women or there was an "economy" aisle I didn't see.


Day 2

Breakfast at the bar in the Sportsmens Lodge. A decent omelet. Work back in the room to catch up on office problems.

A break near noonish to track down the famous Zona Blue. A short walk later & it looks like the place is closed. Either I'm in the wrong spot (the sign says "Zona Blue Hotel") or I'm not sharp enough or patient enough to find the right door. Head back a few blocks to the New Fantasy. Walk in & there's a little room to the left plumb full of cute little gals. I stick my head in & ask "Hable Inglese?" Most simply ignore me but a few chime in "A little". I pick Rachel, a half-Brazilian, half-Tica, 22 year young cutie with blonde hair, small chest & a captivating smile. I normally like the bigger racks but will take attitude over flesh every time. And I'd rather play with a smaller handful of soft, real flesh than a larger handful of hard flesh.

We both strip down and about 40 minutes of delightful massage later I turn over. We agree on chupar sin condon para propina and suddenly the power goes out. No matter. Great finish with a little cuddling & grab-ass afterwards. Excellent time. I tip better than most customers and we both separate quite happy. Check to see if I can get a good deal at the Marriot. I'd spent a single night there a few months ago & it's a great hotel in a crappy location. Too pricey for my cheap ass this time; I decide to tough it out at the Sportsmens. Ultimately a very good decision.


Day 3


Head back to the Zona Blue around noon to see if it's open today. Dumbass. Have to push the doorbell to get buzzed in. Go figure. Anyway, walk through to the rear & there's a nice little bar & half a dozen gals. I was quoted 20,000 Colones when I came through the door but ultimately was charged 22,000 with the CRT card. Picked a little 28 y/o spinner with long black hair & a beautiful smile. Had a great time. Shower, message, play, spoon, shower, say goodbye.

Turned left & had lunch at the Peru restaurant, a little mom & pop place a hundred feet down the block. Nice salad, rice & fried shrimp for 3200 Colones.

Walked around a bit looking for somewhere to buy a few snacks & a couple 2-liter bottles of Sprite. Never found anything. Finally hailed a cab and asked him to take me to a super mercado. Stocked up & headed back to the room to do a little more work.

Met up with Jim - a 52 y/o guy with similar interests from the DC area about 7 after watching the Colts win in one of the playoff games. I was happy but he wasn't. We headed to the Buenos Aires restaurant. Good food at a reasonable price. From there we headed to the tico bar Las Margaritas.

Well, this place was more local in color with very little English being spoken. No issues, everybody was friendly. Sat down, got our drinks and a couple of gals come join us. 5000 Colones per lady drink. Okay, I'm here to have a good time. Keep in mind these are small ladies drinks and the gal's can pretty well inhale them. No biggie. I wind up buying the Dominican gal I'm with three, he buys the Nica gal he's with two (cheap bastard). The whole time the gals are sitting with us - maybe 30 minutes - they're lapdancing & we're groping. A really pretty good time. We each head to the back & have a ball. Only downside - she promised chupar sin condon but did not deliver the bbbj. The room was rather spartan with a couch & limited A/C. On the whole I was pleased. Total cost about $70 US.

Back to the Lodge about 9:30, shower & have a few beers before crashing.


Day 4

Sunday morning, 11AM. Headed over to New Fantasy to see my new buddy Rachel. Slim pickings today & she's off until 10AM Monday. Well, I figger if it's going to be a crap shot I might as well try somewhere else. I head down the street past Zona Blue to Bella Masion. Closed. On to Cha Cha Cha & 747 around the corner. Both closed. On to Krysis where I recall some rather negative reports. Closed. Another block down to 70E. That's most likely the street number as there's no outward signs but the door is open and beckens me to enter. Once inside, it's a relatively warm anteroom, very dark, with half a dozen gals sitting on one side and two or three guys sitting on the other side. Very quiet. I sit down & wait for my pupils to dilate so I can at least make sure I pick out a female.

In the shadows on the far side is an older gal of average looks. I pick her, Jennifer, 31 y/o Tica mother of one. Her English skills are really very good. 12000 Colones for an hour. I pay her & while she's out turning in the cash I find the wall fan & get it plugged in. We start with the standard face-down massage. Really very relaxing. I grad her ass a few times & have a very relaxing half hour. She asks "blow job?" and the next path is set. She's certainly not sporty enough for the young, macho guys who are intersted in hot babes. I buy her a few beers as the game goes along while I drink my Sprite (I learn from my mistakes). She's just a bit looped from the booze and no food (she skipped lunch after I asked her out). Dinner at the Princess Marina & we return to the room. Excellent clhoice for seafood. A great time was had by all. Seems she hasn't had good sex in many months. Day 5

Last day here before I move on to El Salvador. Do some work on the computer & stop off at the local pharmacy to pick up some antibiotics & Cialis for a friend. They always seem to have a deal going if you buy a gazillion pills you get half a gazillion free. Might be okay if you could combine resources with a few buddies but it doesn't make any sense for me. The cost of the C is higher than it was in Cartagena so I hold off on my own supply & will pick some up on my Medellin trip later in the year if the need is there.

I call Jennifer & we're on for 7. She'll meet me in the bar at the Sportsmens Lodge. Gotta change rooms but wind up with a small suite in the new wing which is much better than my original room. Lunch at the News Cafe & a little more work before my 7 O'Clock date.

Meet up with Jimmy from DC & Alberto, a retired semiconductor engineer who's now an expat in San Jose a few blocks from the Sportsmens Lodge. Both great guys. Jimmy's got a cutie lined up to spend the night & then head off to Jaco Beach with him for two nights. Alberto's just drinking, checking out the gals & BSing with us. He'll ultimately cave to the eye candy & take one home...

Jennifer shows up at 7 looking hot. I make the introductions & Jimmy wants her number for when he gets back from Jaco Beach. I tell you there's no honor among *****mongers. She asks my permission (I'm flattered) & I tell her what a good guy Jimmy is. Okay, I lie just a bit. Jimmy's now in a good mood & buys a few rounds of drinks. His gal shows up - I forget her name but she had a t-shirt on that said "Brown Sugar". Next thing you know we've screwed Jimmy out of several more rounds & it's 9 O'Clock. Maybe it was Alberto & me asking Jimmy for just one more round & Jennifer hollering "Go, Jimmy, Go!". Whatever it was, the combination worked and drinks were on Jimmy.

A little too late to head to JR's Ribs like we had planned. I've got an early flight & Jennifer would like to leave by midnight if possible. I recommend to Jennifer that she start hanging out at the Lodge - I think her age (31), looks & great English skills will make her more money than she's currently making. I know her budget is strained & she's a great little gal - hard working, good sense of humor and just a lot of fun to be with. Seems most of the gals that hang around the lodge are the young variety that really just don't do it for me. We have dinner at the Lodge (okay but not spectacular) and another drink (I pay for this one). I can't stand it any longer & we head back to the room.

Jennifer takes a shower. I grab some photos of her while she's under the water & can't complain. She hams it up a little & poses for me. Off to the bed. She did things to me I had never have done before. Probably the best sexual experience of my life, bar none. Sorry guys, made an error on the calculations. That's what typing late at night will do to ya. Anyways the meal I had at La Princessa was tops. Whole Tilapia butterflyed with all kinds of seafood in the middle. Bill was under $20 with a ceviche appetizer.

Might be headed back to CR for a quickie, spring break trip. Fares are around $350 RT from LA if you can handle the dates.

I had dinner at El Balcon, next to New York bar. A decent Italian restaurant. The chefs special was fettuccini with lobster and shrimp for 16, 000 colons ($8).

I think the restaurant is called Balcon de Europa. I've been eating there since it was around the corner, closer to Chelles. It is a decent place, the staff is generally friendly, and the prices are reasonable enough.

You might also want to check your colones to dollars conversion, as 16,000 colones is about $31 and not $8.
