You actually saw the beatings and robberies? In about 22 1/2 years I never had a problem.

Seeing as we're going back a bit, sure I've also seen beatings and robberies. One or two in each mongering trip. My taxi driver screeched to a halt, starting shouting at the beaters who ran away, leaving a guy on the floor, who just jumped up and ran off.

If there's no beatings and robberies in the Gulch then the Del Ray is full of virgins.

Of course it could have completely changed in the last few years.

Sorry but with all due respect this is some of the most irresponsible advice ever given on this website. You are a tourist in a foreign country. Crime does exist in the gulch. I have been traveling to San Jose for about 8 years. I have seen people who were robbed and beaten in the gulch. It does happen.

Taking a taxi to most places in the gulch will cost you about 1000 colones or $2. At night this is cheap insurance. Look at it this way, you spend plenty of money on your airfare, hotel ect, why draw the line on saving $2? If you wind up spending $20 over 3-4 days on cabs a night, and have no problems, then this is money well spent and it comes to about 2% of the total cost of your trip.

I have heard of people getting robbed, but I have yet to meet one of them. However in the US I know of people who have been robbed in areas one would never expect. It can happen, but it can happen anywhere.

It's not an issue of money for me. It is just much easier most times to walk. I also walked through Parque Morazan many times from Nov last year into March of this year. I have never seen that area as safe as it is lately. Lots of other people walking at the times I have been out also, so I never felt like I was the only one wandering around out there. I don't drink, so never walking around drunk and I keep my eyes open for anything suspicious. The crime in CR is not the issue for me. However as for mongering, it has gone way down on my list as a desirable mongering destination.

If you think walking is irresponsible, take a taxi. I'm not trying to talk anyone out of it. However, I know from far more experience than you have what has worked for me and a number of other people I know. Good luck.

I walked by a bunch of trannies at night and never had a problem with them either. I'm not saying there is no chance of a problem, but there is some risk being out at night anywhere you are. Some on this forum make it sound much worse than reality. I also think it is safer these days than years ago. Good luck and have fun.

Best and Worst Massage Parlors in Costa Rica.

All massage parlors have ups and downs. It's part of the business. The ladies that populate this industry are not the most stable women. That being said, here is a list of the best and worst massage places according to me. Remember, this is my opinion. You're certainly welcome to walk through these places a couple times a week for a year and have your own.

1. Hotel Little Havana: Given the ups and downs of the business, I would say HLH does a pretty good job of keeping a steady line up of talent on hand. It pays the most to the girls, and maintains a clean and festive atmosphere. As of March / April 2013, the line up rivals anything the old Zona Blue could claim, and that's saying quite a bit.

2. Relax: For a Tico place, this place is well managed. They seem to keep a decent amount of women on hand, and even a couple flacas. Quite a few hefty gals here, but nothing out of hand.

3. 360: Again, for a Tico place, they do a decent job. Festive atmosphere, plentiful selection.

4. Pirate Club: Strictly a night place. This place does a great job of fielding a top flight roster of entertainment. I don't care for the girl / drink hustle, but at night, it's still the best deal in town.

5. New Fantasy: This place is well located, in the center of gringo row. It almost always has a couple hot girls to choose from. I don't session at New Fantasy on principle. There is a price for locals, and a higher price for gringos. If you're willing to pay the difference, it can be a good time.

6. Eros: Next to Relax. This little place has a limited lineup, but I've almost always found something worthy of my $24 here.

7. Krysis: Another place I've always seen talent at.

8. La Mansion: I've found some winners at La Mansion over the years. Not always, but it goes in phases and sometimes has the most solid roster for the price.

9. Illusiones: Some of the hottest girls I've ever done for under cien have worked at Illusiones. They seem to be going through a slump the last few months, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they'll rally.

10. Le Grillon: A night place only. Charges a cover. I've done some sweethearts here over the years. Runs hot and cold, mostly cold the last couple of months.

11. Candyland: Sporadic bursts of promise, followed by lulls of inconsistency. Open late, and close to the gulch. Mostly a Tico place, but worth a glance.

12. Nicole's: I've seen amazing talent at this place. Then, as quick as it came, it disappeared. Not sure what happened.

13. Bar Tenga: Almost never any talent.

14. Bella Mansion: Don't get your hopes up, and you won't be disappointed.

15. Idem: This place used to be among the best. It was always pricey, but for many years, the talent warranted the fee. The guy who ran the place had a stroke, his idiot cousin has ran the place into the ground ever since. Stocking ugly girls and raising the prices.

16. Lilliam: This is a place you will find some of the highest concentration of ugly per square foot ever at. But, I've pulled some diamonds in the rough here. But most of the time, it's like the cantina scene in star wars.

17. VIPS: This place is hit or miss, but I've landed some very lovely girls here on occasion. Just depends on your luck that night.

18. Arcadas: About half the time I find a honey here, the other half it's all vinegar.

19. Alcazar: On the more expensive menu. Usually some hot girls in here for about $70 an hour. In Costa Rica, there is sex in the Champaign room.

20. Pantera Rosa: More of a strip club, the talent there runs in phases. Hopefully, you'll find it on an upswing.

21. Muses: I've rarely found anything doable here, but I'm open to being impressed some day. The few girls I have pulled here were marginal performers at best.

22. Oasis: Another example of hit or miss. I used to love this place, but the last year or so hasn't been kind to its talent pool.

23. Portugesa: The cleaner of options on Calle 6. I've occasionally done ok here, but usually wasting my time.

24. Maison: All ugly, all the time. You're really just trying to find the leper with the most skin.

25. Eroticas I, II, & III: Occasionally, they let a pretty girl in, before realizing their mistake and replacing her with a hound.

26. Jetset: The only good news about this place is they don't charge by the pound.

2. Looking at the map and a prior post. 20 min walk from Mona Lisa to Del Ray? 1000 Colones taxi? Can anyone verify both of these?

3. I've read reports about not walking at night. But what are you meaning by night? The literal definition where we talking about 7 pm? I'm assuming that walking around Gringo Gulch from 7 pm to 10 pm should be fine, and the warnings are meant for walking around midnight. Walking around 9 pm should be fine? And generally speaking of course. I know some of you are fine walking around at all times while some people always take a taxi.

2. 1000 colones or less. Depends on traffic. I would say more like 800. 900. I base that on taxis in the past that I have taken from the Best Western to Del Rey.

Walk during the day, take a taxi during the evenning. For goodness sake. Spend $2 (1000 colones)bucks on a taxi and play it safe at night. GoodLuck!

What are the local options?

Bill from the Sportsman's Lodge is the new heavy at CRT.

CRT's future will depend on its usefulness. If it's a source of useful information, entertainment, and community, it will survive and perhaps flourish. While it still holds a majority of the CR community, it no longer holds a monopoly. It will now need to compete with other local options for market share. Which in the end will be good for everyone who travels to CR to monger.

This report will cover my two-week visit to San Jose, Quepos and Jaco Beach in Feb / March 2013. In SJ I stayed at Hemingway Inn in Gringo Gulch and had a great time there. I paid $40 / night including tax and it is GF, the owner and staff are very nice and a nice breakfast is included. The first night I went to Castillo Hotel next door to Hemingway upon the advice of another monger and picked up a delicious mega mammary tica named Carolina and she spent the night with me for $50. The next day I went to New Fantasy massage about a one minute walk from Hemingway and had a so-so massage with BBBJ. I think it was about $30. At night I checked out the infamous Del Rey and spent all night with a busty Dominicana but be sure you lock up your stuff because I caught her rummaging through my closet when I got up to take a leak. There are many gorgeous beauties at Del Rey but also some old hags. The beauties want $150 but will settle for $100 or sometimes $80 if it is slow. There is a bartender at Mona Lisa Hotel not far from Hemingway named Melissa that is gorgeous and has big knockers that I regret not hooking up with so I hope one of you guys can tap into that.

Stephania from 360 massage was the highlight of my twelve ladies in CR but the place is difficult to find on Calle 34 Avenida 5. I tried to arrange a TLN with her but my Spanish is is weak so no go. Hotel Little Havana was a lot of fun up the street from Hemingway especially big-titted DD Keyla. The cheap casas on Calle 6 were fine. Had a nice BBBJ for about $20 from a super busty DDD Colombiana at Lillian. That place, too, was hard to find, though. The rest of the girls I had from SJ were from Del Rey. Aside from mongering there are some museums and a zoo within walking distance in Gringo Gulch but nothing to write home about. I took a bus trip to La Paz waterfalls which was worthwhile, though. I think it was $80 and you get to see all exotic animals and poisonous frogs there with a nice lunch included.

The bus to Quepos was only $9 and very comfortable. I stayed at a hotel called Sirenas in the heart of Quepos. It was not GF but has a nice pool and good aircon. Of course Las Pescadores is the place to pick up ladies in Quepos but the selection is scant. Excellent food, however. A cat fight erupted around midnight there one night resulting in a black eye for one of the ticas. I did have a nice time, however, with a tall, busty dark girl named Patricia who seemed to enjoy being filmed during BBBJ at the sleezy short-time hotel around the corner. Of course when in Quepos you have to go to the national park and see the monkeys on the beach. I also went whitewater rafting down the Narange (some Class V including a rapids named Gringo Eater) , zip lining and a catamaran cruise where I drank as much rum as possible in two hours.

A short and inexpensive bus ride to Jaco was next. I stayed at a place called Hotel Green for $75 / night which has a nice pool and is GF and a ten-minute walk to town and the infamous Hotel Cocal. They all want $100 for short-time and most of them get it unless it is late or they are not so pretty. So I caved in but made sure it included a massage, BBBJ and CIF photos. The variety of beautiful ticas, chicas, nicas and colombianas there is amazing. I rented a motorscooter for about $30 / day while in Jaco.

Make sure you buy the departure tax at a hotel before you go to airport. Otherwise you have to wait in yet another long line. Dunn Inn in Gringo Gulch sells it I think for $33.

I'm glad I went but Costa Rica costa lotta compared to Philippines and Vietnam. Thanks to all the guys on the forum that provided advice.

Sad to hear what's gone on with the HDR. Is it really that bad? Was thinking about heading back to SJ but I'm not sure where I would even hold up. Used to stay in the HDR for hours taking hotties back to the Morazan. Not a big MP guy.
