My point is you need to ask yourself is this trip worth the few grand you spend. I think not. I did not leave with any amazing memories. I also never got laid on my last day. Yesterday. I just wasn't turned on enough to go through the effort. I've never left a country without a final nut. This was my first time.

The del ray was loaded with good looking girls but at a hefty price and the potential for a lame session. Bargin offerings were very lame compared to other countries.

Not to mention some of the ticos love to ream you with prices for anything.

I was quoted $71 for a baseball hat at a skate shop. They gave me a discount with the dollar pegged at 520 see per $1 for the bargin price of $63. I told them they were smoking crack.

A dinner at rosti pollo (like a dennys) was $16: Soup drink and 3 empanadas.

A one liter bottle of water was 1500k $3. New York is way cheaper.

San Jose is a weird place

Prices were out of control for such a country.
This topic comes up every so often on all the boards. I have been traveling to CR for 18 years. I was in a serious relationship with one Tica for 8 of those years. I have been to Peru 5 times and Rio 9 times so I believe I have a feel for the hobby. First, in most of Latin American countries there are two prices, the Gringo price and the real price. Second, if your frame of refrence is limited to the Gulch, it is not the real CR. The Del Rey has been polluted by traveling hard core *****s from other countries who engage in price fixing and collusion, so be prepared. You can get some really hot Ticas if you venture out into the country and for 10 or 15000 c. I had some great looking girls in Peru, with no limits and had impromptu orgys with 3 girls who fucked us all all night for $100. Some great stuff. Brasil however, offers in my opinion, some of the best odds for a great session. More often then not the girl seems to enjoy it more then me. Half the time the girl asks for anal, she wants it. Have to love Brasil. Copa has many things going for it. You have the worlds number one beach within walking distance, the hottest women in the world and very affordable. Tons of reasonable hotels and apartments. Great restaurants all within blocks. The only thing that keeps me from visiting Rio more often is the long flight. When I get a chance to act up in san Jose, I call a favorita. I know what I'm going to get and the service is more boyfriend sex. Fishing the Del Rey is very risky. You can be the sharpest guy on the block, conduct a great interview, in Spanish and still get fooled when you get to the room. Thats why the exchange of information on this board is so impportant. It can steer you fellow members to the ladies who care about good service and help expose the rip offs. Pura Vida!

    The subject of costs...

As I stated in an earlier post, I don't think San Jose is a good destination for mongers on a budget. I generally spend more than planned on my trips. Nonetheless, I have friends who refuse to pay more than 30,000 colones and still manage to consistently pull some of the hottest ladies from the Del Rey. The same generally goes for the Sportsmens Lodge. It is currently a buyers market. Bashers of Bar Idem like to complain how expensive it is, but you can still session there for 31,000 colones, and I have run into some FINE ladies there. With a CRT membership, sessions at HLH are just $46.00. You can get laid at Krysis and Relax for $30-40. And for $16 you can eat a damn good chicken dinner with beer and tip included at Cafe Mundo, one hell of a good restaurant right near the Sportsmens Lodge. $16 will also buy you 3 good meals at some of the good tico restaurants (not the fast-food dumps). And if you take the time to go to the grocery store, liters of water run around 500 colones, and a bottle of Pilsen beer even less.

Really, the one major pricing complaint I have is with the cost of lodging. I now stay at a damn nice place I really like for the great price of $34 a night. The room comes with AC, mini fridge, cable TV, a great bed, and is QUIET! There is but one issue: the room is on floor #3, and the clean, modern bath (two of them, actually) is on floor #1! But I don't care!

I am planning on visiting SJ soon.

In the venues that you just visited, did you see pretty girls like those in the Bloomingdale's and Macys catalogs?

What was the asking gift for private time in that case?

    Thank you,

    Costs/Value Ratio

I just got back to nyc today...newark to be exact. The cabs now charge you a $1 per bag that you put in the cab and $11 dollars in tolls added to a $55 dollar cab ride. Total was $68. Thank you very much for your recent reply to my post requesting info on quality of chicas and senhoritas in San Jose. Your feedback provides me with enough info to picture the field down there in terms of independent girls, at least, for the first few days. I speak very fluent spanish and no english when I travel in Latinland. I hope to find some fancy looking ladies in the mentioned places. I use my polished spanish to develop a good relationship with the chica before inviting her to anything personal. If I do not get a good feel from her, I move on to meet another one. I will do a little extra research before the trip. I am a discrete traveler an prefer renting short term apartments than hotels. Hope to find some in downtown SJ.

    Regards,

    Darien

It appears you think I was denigrating Artisttyp's post and his right to post it and his opinions therein. Quite the contrary. I certainly hope others didn't get a similar impression. Maybe I could have worded things a little better. I have read some of his posts on the Peru and Colombia boards and have enormous respect for the depth and volume of his contributions to ISG. BTW, I also greatly appreciate YOUR contributions to this board. You have provided tons of helpful info to newbies and CR veterans like myself.

    "..............................................................."

No problem. I just was standing up for Artisttyp's right to be somewhat critical of not really liking a place - even though he had only been there one time - like I said in my PM to you ---- when I have a bad meal in a restaurant I don't need to go back to give them more chances to "get me".

I personally like going to San Jose CR....although I have been enough times for "the glitter to have worn off the gold" - for me. Perhaps I need to look to other distant places to go........and see how I like them.

But again - that is just my personal opinion. For others, San Jose is like "heaven on earth", and more power to them - if they truly enjoy being there.

Pura Vida - Good Travels - and most of all Peace ......Amigo !!!!!!

Another opinion....or my 2 cents worth.....

I am more or less in agreement with Artisttyp with his assessment of San Jose, Costa Rica.
I read his report and can concur with him on about 98 % of it as being a fairly honest and accurate report......even though he was frank about many things.

I have not been to South America, so I can not comment on any of that....but I have been to Central America plenty of times in the last 6-7 years. I have probably made at least 10-12 or more trips to Panama, Costa Rica & Nicaragua - enough to know (in my opinion) that Nicaragua is really a 3rd world country compared to either Costa Rica or Panama.

    And............

I spent 30 days in Quepos one time and 90 days another time in San Jose.....so I know those areas pretty well I believe.

I think a seasoned monger who has been on several trips to other locals - can tell us his opinon of a place...namely San Jose CR with just one good trip there under his belt.

When you have been down the road a bit mongering in whatever location - be it.....Mexico, South America, Central America or the Far East (and I've also been to Asia....spending 6 months there once time) you sort of get a feeling about places.....good or bad or maybe sometimes just mediocre - as I think Artisttyp must think about San Jose..........
After all he has just reported to us - his opinion about visiting San Jose. His report is not written in stone nor has he tried to publish it in any travelers guide - that I know of. It was just his take on the place from being there and comparing it to the other mongering destinations that he has visited.

Artisttyp, a senior member of this forum, has almost 1200 reports to his credit - he surely must have gained some very insightful info to have had made all those reports.

For me personally - I am getting older and may not ever return to Central America - as either I am sort of burned out on being there so much or it's the old age thing catching up with ( I am 65)...but in any case------- I do think a guy can sum up his experiences in a report such as Artisttyp has done about San Jose.....and perhaps we can all learn something and get a better insight about a place when we have read and comprehended such a report.

So Artisttyp thanks for your report on being in San Jose, and all your other input on this forum - as well. I thought you were pretty close with most all of your assessements on the city and the scene there. You may have missed some of the more subtle attritubutes of San Jose because you were only there one time - but for the most part, I thought yor did a good job with your observations ------ I enjoyed reading your rerport on your trip to San Jose , and I will look forward to reading more of your reports in the future.

What I am about to say does not apply to Artisttyp's CR posts or even your travel resume cited above. I have read virtually every post on every thread of this board over the last 5 years, and I have occasionally encountered the argument that the San Jose scene essentially sucks when compared to other mongering destinations like Rio or Medellin or Buenos Aires or Thailand or the Phillipines. By extension, anybody who thinks CR it is a great place to have a good time is essentially an ignorant rube who hasn't been to these other places and doesn't know any better.

While my travel experiences might pale in comparison with a goodly number of ISG veterans, I HAVE mongered in Amsterdam, Angeles City, Bangkok, Buenos Aires, Curacao, Jakarta, Lima, Prague, among other places. Due to political unrest in Thailand, I just recently postponed my planned May trip to LOS (trip # 2) until November. The first thing I did after postponing this trip was to book trip #12 (I think) to CR. Because I have friends there. Because I know the lay of the land. Because I have a blast EVERY time I go there!

My point is simple. If you make the effort and create the proper foundation and treat the ladies with kindness and respect, you can have a great time even in San Jose. And I freely admit that if you do the same in Medellin or Lima, you might even have a better time!

Thank you for your kind words also mr jet setter. I can see that many guys love it here and I did talk with many regulars who have their own "thing" going on but I didn't mesh with the scene like I do other places.

I did well and I got just a taste of what its about. However I didn't feel the connection I did other places.

I'm not knocking it. I just think CA is not for me.

    * I thought I was slick until I joined ISG. At this point I realize I was still wet behind the ears...even growing up in NYC. When I learn is when I listen and read. There are some really sharp mongers out there and here on ISG. Learn how to connect with them and then listen.

I appreciate the help I recieve.

...rushing to an mp...sorry for the major typos.

They are also definitely more expensive and time-consuming to get to, at least for me, living in Denver. One can get a hell of a lot out of San Jose, once you get to know the ropes. I don't think it is really fair to make any sweeping generalizations about the San Jose scene on the basis of a single trip. I've been lucky enough in my dozen or so trips to spend some time with a handful of very hot ladies who could pass muster anywhere in SA. I've also partied down with a couple dozen more who might not be a 9 or 10 on the ratings scale but were plenty sexy and a blast to be with. A good percentage of these ladies I met at the Sportsmens Lodge, but I've also had great luck in the past at the former Zona Blue, now Hotel Little Havana, and at Kamur, the strip club, and at Bar Idem. Veterans of this board and CRT have also turned me on to "semi-pros" who work rather infrequently and would never be caught dead in an MP or the Del Rey or Sportsmens. I've managed to accumulate some phone numbers of ladies I can hook up with whenever I come down. On my last few trips, I've been spending time with a lady who could easily pass for a fashion model. Yes, you can have a good time here with some very attractive ladies.

And, yes, you might end up spending more than you really wanted to. I don't rate San Jose as a good destination for "budget" mongering. A decent hotel room at monger-friendly places like the Castillo, Sportsmens Lodge, and La Amistad will set you back AT LEAST $60. Artisttyp, I'm not sure what that room without a window cost you at the Castillo, but the rooms there that I like (rooms 20-23) run around $70, if I remember, before the CRT discount. And the nicer restaurants in the San Jose area often seem priced at U.S. levels. As for the ladies, I generally pay between $40 and $70 a session, but I like to session at least twice a day. I ALWAYS end up spending more than planned on my trips.

One final note on the pricing at HLH. One-hour sessions are $46 with a CRT VIP membership card (highly recommended due to the discounts here and at all of the hotels mentioned above.)

I haven't been partying for a few days already but as usual I have some opinions that I would like to share.

    Hotels -

El Castillo has been a blessing for me. This is probably one of the coolest hotels I've stayed at. The staff is SUPER cool and the hotel policies are the most liberal than any other hotel I've dealt with. The only reason I would not stay here is if they put me in the two rooms on the lobby floor. There isn't enough circulation in those rooms and there are no windows.

The entire hotel is filled with mongers and I've had alot of fun hanging out with some of the guys. Girls are waiting for you at the hotel bar!

    * You must get your hotel siutation straightened out prior to arriving. If you don't you chance taking whatever is left paying a premium or staying in a shithole hotel. There are very few in between options here. Your mongering WILL suffer.

If you stay for a long time chances are some local expats can set you up in an apartment but that takes a little time. I never went to see one but was offered a look by an expat that I befriended.

    WEATHER-

I really blew it. I sweat my ass off in central america but san jose is at 3/4 K feet. I had no idea and I packed the wrong clothes. What I really needed is a jeans jacket and some warmer sleeping clothes. The first few days were cold enough to wear a sweatshirt in the morning. Bottom line is I fucked up and thats how I got sick.

Pack like you would for medellin. You can get hit with anything here.

    GIRLS

What can I say. I didn't expect much and thats what I got. My favorite spots were the new york bar (half block from del rey) and a few of the MPS. I did find some local haunts as well.

NY BAR-(freelance bar) You can pull chicas out of here for $30 an hour. DO NOT offer more. These are the girls that cant make it at the Del Ray. Some are very drunk or a little bit chopped up but thats what you get here with budget offerings.

MPS- I really liked relax. I went to a few others but there wasnt the greatest talent in them. I could screw just about anything but for $30 a half hour with bbbj I could do better somewhere else. Normal sessions run between 10 to 12 K then add a tip for extras. Alot of times they wont let you slide with extras for less than 5k ($10). I was expecting a san jose gringo hustle so I just went with it. A few times I didnt settle a price before and I gave her the equivelent of $6. I think they are used to getting more.

    LOCAL HAUNTS-

If you go to avenida 6 and calle 3 close to the coca cola bus terminal you will see a few places side by side down the street by the corner. They are little dive bars that lead back to rooms and hotels/pensiones with girls standing outside. Pensiones prices are 7k but some of the bar/rooms places were 10k and 12k(for gringos!). Only one in three girls in three different places would do bbbj for a tip. I think these are high traffic girls who earn change no matter what.
I was not cool for being there like in other countries. Some locals were not amused but I did my thing regardless....low end sleaze better than del ray rip offs but not up to par with SA countries.

VIPS and the other bar next door a block from hotel dunn inn/Clarion are good low end late night options for the same prices. Girls vary greatly in looks.

    STRIP BARS-

Went to a few dives payed non dive prices for drinks posted on the wall...left very quickly and never returned to the circuit.

As far as girls go thats it. You can find the mp's just by walking around. The other guys can turn you onto them as well. It very easy to get a hang of it after a few days. If you find "relax" you can find eros next door and idem across the street..

    FOOD :

Stay away from the gringo trendy joints. These assholes charge more for an entree than in new york city. Hotel Havanna is another rip off joint with NY prices for drinks and $55 half hour sessions. I hate when gringos bring the bullshit with them...it screws it all up.

CR isn't cheap by far. For what I spend here I could do the same in buenos aires cheaper in lima or medellin. I am in no rush to come back but I wanted to see it for myself. If you aren't a bar crawler there is not much to do after 7pm. Central america is depressing compared to SA. San Jose was my last stop in CA. I will continue to go further south.

Thank you to stevewxly and juan carter for helping me out. As always I am available to help people out as well.

I also wanted to mention that the term MP'S is a very misleading term for san jose. These places are straight up chongos/brothels. The only place that even offered a massage was new fantasy. That kept me away from CR for a while.

    Good Luck
I also want to offer thanks for your reporting. As someone who has experienced Buenos Aires, Lima and Medellin, I can understand your disappointment with San Jose.

You are right about deals that can be made. I just wasn't into this scene enough to really put myself out there.
It is a love it or hate it place, as tequila rock has become (I hear, I have not been a couple of years). And it does not suprise me that many people are not happy with their servce-it is NOT a point and shoot kind of place, if you are seeking more than wam bam thank you mam service. I like the club feel- helps with the fantasy, which is a big part of the rush....When I am in CR (was there last Dec) I much prefer the sportsmans as a place to hang but i love a good drunked evening at the DR....
