I'll be heading into SJ and have a couple of hours to spare in the morning before my flight leaves on Saturday. I would return to Relax but last time I was there they didn't open till noon or so.

Man, I have been to idem a few times already, and I have not noticed nor did I even have a hint that there are some other massage places on that street.

It's right across the street, behind a metal gate i believe, but you would definately up the stairs. If you were to go up the stairs you would see a bunch of half naked chicks then you would know your in the right place. Someone on the other forums called the place Relax massage parlor, but I didn't a sign that states it. Good selection ticas and nicas for $30 and the most famous one. Her name is Jenny.

Now that's on a $45 session, so what is that, let's see: 66.6%!

A very generous tip is $10, that's more than 25%. I give that if they do everything I want including photos and/or video.

He probably bought them a drink or two in the bar as well and I'm pretty sure they get kick backs on those. But even if they don't, $10 is still plenty.

You might say, "Well, if I feel like being generous, what is wrong with that?"

I'll tell you what is wrong with it, and I've seen this happen everywhere from restaurants in Mexico to massage parlors in Costa Rica: If you do it, they'll try to get it from the next guy and if they get it twice then they'll begin to think they're entitled to it, and pretty soon - especially in the case of a massage parlor - they'll start begging or whining for it from every guy who comes in and the newbies and easily swayed will think "Oh, I guess that's standard. Okay, here...."

Tipping girls is just like tipping in restaurants:
1) You never give more than you feel like giving
2) 10-20% is standard and it IS based on good service. Service that wasn't so good deserves no tip at all. Good service, 10-15%, great service 20-25%.
3) Tipping too much makes you look like a fool. I speak Spanish and I've heard girls talking about what fools gringos are for giving away so much money. They don't respect us for it. Ask any waitress. Latinos don't tip much if any at all. They don't believe in it. I do advocate tipping and I consider myself a good tipper. I tip the girls 15-25% unless I get bad service.

Another way to go is to carry some little travel bottles of body cream or body oil or conditioner. The girls LOVE this, and they tend to remember you for it. I always try to carry a bottle or two with me when I go to an MP, and if I take a girl to my room I leave them by the bed and give them to the girl at the end of the session. They cost about $1 at any U.S. drugstore. I give them that in addition to the 10-20%.

As a community of mongers we have to stick together on this. Just like not giving girls $100 or cien as soon as they ask for it. It's bad form. It leads to inflation. It's dumb. It hurts your fellow mongers. Be smart. Don't drive the prices up.

You can go to the privete banks, don't have to make one hour line, for a few colones that you safe wont be able to pay for cup of cooffe. I know a couple a girls the will charge you 100 goodlooking girls but some don't speak English!!

Done most of my mongering in Colombia. Been to CR before, but NOT for mongering. I'm hoping to go to San Jose for a few days in May. Are the girls interested more in dollars or colones? Don't want to get a bunch of colones only to find that dollars are the "pussy" currency in CR. I always needed colones for food and hotel, but wasn't sure about the working girls.

Go to an ATM and withdrawl colones and pay ALL of them in colones. Do these putas think they are working in New York or Las Vegas?
If you need to exchange your USD, go to a bank. You'll stand in line for an hour but you'll get the best rate.

Professor 1 - I can agree with you there. Although 'cien' is the opening shot - if you treat them with respect and show you are not a 'newbie' - make a counter offer and they will then drop their prices quicker than your pants come down. The hard core ones, with some good looks and youth with want to stick with 'cien' or maybe $80, but given the economy we are now in, those prices will drop now as well.

They always start at cien. The hot ones are more difficult to bargain down especially if there's alot of business around at the time. $40 is a good opening bid. They'll usually counter with $80 and we agree at $60. Rule of thumb: DON'T pay the cien.

I spent a few days in San Jose last week, and found that the service was much better at the massage parlors than with the Del Ray women, especially given the huge price difference.

I had a couple of great GFE experiences at one place called Krysis, on Ave. 7 between calles 1 and 2. It's right next door to a strip club that is only open at night. Quite a few 7s and 8s and very sweet and acommodating girls. Price is 20, 000 cls for an hour and came with a great massage. Sorry can't remember the girls names, but they were both Nica and morena, young and short with only a bit of baby fat.

With the Del Ray crew it is always a crap shoot for how they will be once in the room, and I don't like the 100$ price for that chance. 20$ or so, sure, who cares?

Relax, on calle 11 between 10 and 12 ave. Was great as well. Spent a fantastic hour with Alicia, a Nica maybe late 20's who was so sweet, great kisser and wonderful wet sloppy BBBJ. Price was 15, 000 for the hour. There are showers on premise as you may work up a sweat. I always tip well for good service, usually half before we start with a promise for more at the end if earned.

On the same block there are 2 other places, Idem, which is across from Relax and another one a few doors down. Relax actually doesn't have a name out front, it kind of has a neon type of sign I think with a woman's siloette or something. It's kind of hard to see, its a bit back from the sidewalk and it took me a couple of walk byes to see it. I checked out the other 2 as well but it looked like Relax had the best looking and they were definitely friendly when I walked, in all smiles and hola papi and one grabbed my ass.

I would have loved to spend more time there but unfortunately had other obligations. I managed to get some generic Cialis for I think 3, 000 colones for 2, which worked very well. I never knew that one actually lasts up to 36 hours. I wish I would have bought a bunch as they are much more expensive outside of San Jose.

Will report later on the fun time I surprisingly had in Punta Arenas, a dumpy old port town that I had to spend a night in, with a gorgeous young mute Nica chica!

I agree with Kman, depending on how you define the "good ones". If you're talking about true 9's and 10's, that only show up at peak hours, I've had to pay $100.

CL, I found that the chicas at places like the Del Rey, Key Largo, and even the sportmans will quote US and prefer to be paid in US, although certainly money is money and they will not turn you away if you only have Colones. The sportsmans changes money and was giving a rate of about 530 during my February 12-16 trip. Seems to me that the places you should save your colones for are the massage parlors, especially the low end places. Prices at these places are quoted in Colones although I did not try to pay with US. Happy hunting, BM.

I will be arriving on March 26th and departing March 31st, I am always at the bar during the day and later in the evening (5 PM or so till usually 2 AM). Spend most of the time back and forth to/from the Blue Marlin to Key Lago, just to keep the girls off balance so they do not hang on my arm all night wanting drinks or to go up stairs
